In 2026 let's focus on these 5 things- "MIND, DIET, WATER, YOGA, SLEEP"

Mind -for healthy mind do meditation, learn new things, increase your social interaction make new friends, do things for others where you yourself don't have any benefit ( selfless service - karma yoga)

Yoga - make it a routine in your life. 3 days in class, 2 or 3 days self practice at home. You do yoga for yourself not others, so don't wait for others( friends and family) start now. Don't procrastinate.

Water- water is life, females should drink 3 litres , males should drink 4 litres everyday.

Diet- take 20 minutes to eat a meal, when you feel like taking a second helping stop. Last meal of the day should be before 7 pm. After the 3 main meals - breakfast lunch and dinner walk for 15 mins to aid digestion reduce glucose spike, manage weight.

Sleep - sleep for 7 hours everyday. Body recovers during sleep. Go to bed between 10-11 pm and wake up between 5-6 am. If you have difficulty sleeping stop using phone or laptop 1 hour before going to sleep. Do nadishudhi and bhramari on your bed before sleeping.

Changes in these 5 aspects will bring about a big change in quality of life.

Rerouting…….

With Amala Radhesh & Radhesh Nair

Few days back during a yoga session a discussion came up that even the most upbeat person can become depressed when our physical health is affected. If due to any reason a person’s physical mobility is affected there is a chance that he can slip into depression, dejection. This discussion took my mind to a sutra from Patanjali’s yoga sutra, which I like to practice and tell everyone to do as well
“VITARKA BADHANE PRATIPAKSHABHAVANAM”
When we are faced with “Vitarka”- passions like negative thinking, violence, dishonesty, theft, eating/drinking prohibited things, we should practice the opposites “pratipaksha bhavanam” like love, tolerance, truthfulness.
In the next sutra it is mentioned that we have vitarka due to either lobha -greed, krodha- anger, moha- confusion and pratipaksha bhavana is the realization that if you give in to this kind of thinking it will cause intense pain, ignorance.
I liked this sutra so much while doing MSc yoga that the phrase pratipaksha bhavanam has stuck with me. I try to use it always in my life whenever I feel sad, depressed, in doubt I try to practice or think the opposite. I think ‘we should count our blessings.’ This sutra teaches us to ‘reroute’ and ‘substitute’ negative thought with positive thought.
Sometimes I try to list things for which I am grateful in my mind. Today I thought I will type it down. So here is my list of 20 gratitudeasana
Feel free to mention your list in comments….

1. I am thankful for a beautiful family, husband, and children.
2. I am thankful for my physical and mental health
3. I am thankful for a roof above my head
4. I am thankful that I have good clothes to wear
5. I am thankful that I live in a free country
6. I am thankful that I have freedom to live my life as I please and take my own decisions.
7. I am thankful that I found my IKIGAI in teaching and spreading yoga

13. I am grateful that my children are healthy
14. I am thankful that I can travel

Supta badhakonasana is a beautiful restorative asana, in this video i have used a rolled yoga mat as support for the upper body, you can use a bolster or pillows. Keep the bolster in such a way that one end is touching the tail bone, head also should rest on the bolster.
This is an excellent pose for all reproductive system and menstrual disorders and hence a boon for women. It also opens the chest and lungs leading to a deep relaxation, Increase in lung capacity. It should be done every day for atleast 10-15 minutes. Later on in the video I am streching legs forward and continuing to lie on bolster, this is an excellent pose to relax in savasana after asana practice. You can also take afternoon power nap in this position 😜. You will wake up completely rejuvenated and raring to face rest of the day. 😜
