ABSU Delegation Meets Union Education Minister, Submits Memorandum on Bodo Language and Educational Institutions
New Delhi, December 16:
A high-level delegation of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), led by its President Dipen Boro, along with General Secretary Khanindra Basumatary and Vice President Kwrwmdao Wary, met the Hon’ble Union Minister of Education, Government of India, Dr. Dharmendra Pradhan, at Parliament House in New Delhi today. The meeting focused on long-pending and key issues related to the promotion of the Bodo language and the strengthening of educational infrastructure in Bodo-inhabited areas of Assam, in line with the spirit of the historic Bodo Accord, 2020.
During the meeting, the ABSU delegation submitted a detailed memorandum to the Union Education Minister, highlighting several important demands aimed at ensuring linguistic inclusion and educational equity for Bodo students across the state and the country. The delegation stressed the urgent need to include Bodo as a Modern Indian Language (MIL) subject from Class I to Class XII in PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalayas located in Kokrajhar, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Rangia, Maligaon, and other districts of Assam where a significant Bodo population resides.
The memorandum also sought the inclusion of the Bodo language as an option in Language-I (L-1) in the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), which would enable more Bodo-medium candidates to participate in national-level teacher recruitment processes. Emphasising equal opportunity for students, the delegation demanded that major national examinations be conducted in the Bodo language, including the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination for Class VI and the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) examination for Class VIII.
In addition to language-related issues, the ABSU leaders raised concerns regarding the availability of quality central educational institutions in newly created districts. They urged the government to establish additional Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) to cater to the growing educational needs of students in these areas.
The delegation further reminded the Union Minister about the commitments made under the Bodo Accord, 2020, and strongly appealed for the establishment of a Central University, a Tribal University regional campus, and a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in the region as promised in the agreement. They stated that such institutions would play a transformative role in higher education, research, and skill development for the youth of Bodoland and neighbouring areas.
The meeting was described as satisfactory and meaningful by the ABSU leadership. The Union Education Minister listened patiently to the concerns raised and assured the delegation that the issues would be examined sympathetically at the appropriate levels.
Apart from ABSU President Dipen Boro, the delegation included Vice President Kwrwmdao Wary, General Secretary Khanindra Basumatary, and Kokrajhar Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Jayanta Basumatary. The ABSU expressed hope that the discussions would lead to concrete policy decisions in the near future for the advancement of the Bodo language and the educational development of the region.
