It’s Not a "Carrybag" – It’s a Uterus! Let’s Stop Unnecessary Removals!
Our local newspaper has launched a vital campaign exposing a troubling trend: in rural areas, 90-95% of hysterectomies (uterus removals) are performed without strong medical justification. Often, women are scared into surgery with claims that their uterus might turn cancerous, or worse, pressured into it. A colleague jokingly boasted at our annual meeting about making villages "bag-free" (pishvimukt)—a crude remark that hides a painful reality for women.
This is not just a medical issue—it’s a human rights concern. Removing a healthy uterus can lead to lifelong physical and emotional harm, including early menopause, hormonal imbalances, and loss of fertility. Let’s raise awareness and empower women with knowledge! Together, we can challenge this harmful practice.
Understanding the Causes:
Unnecessary hysterectomies are often linked to treatable conditions like:
- Fibroids:
Non-cancerous growths in the uterus, manageable with medication or less invasive procedures.
- Unusual Bleeding:
Can stem from hormonal changes, polyps, or fibroids—rarely cancer.
- Leucorrhea:
Abnormal vaginal discharge, often due to infections (e.g., bacterial vaginosis), not a hysterectomy indicator.
