A surgical procedure where damaged parts of the shoulder joint (usually due to arthritis, fractures, or rotator cuff injuries) are replaced with artificial components (prosthesis).
• Types:
1. Total Shoulder Replacement: Replaces both ball (humeral head) and socket (glenoid).
2. Partial (Hemi) Replacement: Only the ball is replaced.
3. Reverse Shoulder Replacement: Ball and socket positions are reversed, used for severe rotator cuff damage.
• Indications: Chronic pain, limited mobility, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, severe fractures, failed previous surgeries.
• Procedure Duration: 1.5 to 3 hours.
• Recovery: Physical therapy is essential; recovery takes several months (usually 3–6 months).
• Risks: Infection, nerve damage, prosthesis loosening, blood clots.
• Outcome: Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved range of motion

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Reconstruction

What is it?
PCL reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to replace a torn posterior cruciate ligament in the knee, typically using a graft (often from the patient’s own tissue or a donor).

When is it needed?
• Severe PCL injuries (Grade III)
• Persistent instability or pain after non-surgical treatment
• Combined injuries involving other knee ligaments

Procedure:
• Arthroscopic (minimally invasive) or open surgery
• Graft (commonly from hamstring, patellar tendon, or allograft) is anchored into tunnels drilled in the femur and tibia
• Physical therapy follows to restore strength and mobility

Recovery:
• Full recovery can take 6–12 months
• Often involves bracing, restricted activity, and a phased rehab program

What Happens in Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation?

When your shoulder dislocates (pops out of the joint), it often tears a piece of cartilage inside called the labrum — specifically the lower front part, known as a Bankart lesion.

If the labrum doesn’t heal properly, your shoulder can become unstable, leading to repeated dislocations — especially when you raise your arm or play sports.

What is a Bankart Lesion?
• It’s a tear in the front part of the labrum (the ring of cartilage around your shoulder socket).
• This tear weakens the socket, so the ball of the shoulder joint can slip out more easily.

How Does a Bankart Repair Help?

A Bankart repair is a surgery that fixes the torn labrum and tightens the loose shoulder joint.

Here’s what happens:
1. Arthroscopic surgery (minimally invasive, using small incisions and a camera).
2. The surgeon cleans the torn area and uses small anchors to reattach the labrum to the bone.
3. Sometimes, loose or stretched ligaments are tightened as well.

This surgery restores stability to the shoulder and helps prevent future dislocations.

After Surgery (Recovery)
• Sling for 3–6 weeks.
• Physical therapy starts slowly, then builds strength and range of motion.
• Return to sports: usually around 4–6 months (depends on the person and the sport).

Success Rate
• Very high — 80–95% success in preventing future dislocations, especially in young active people.
• The earlier the surgery is done after repeated dislocations, the better the long-term outcome.

What Is Total Knee Replacement?

Total knee replacement is a surgery to replace a damaged or worn-out knee joint with an artificial one. It’s often done for people who have severe arthritis or a bad knee injury that causes pain and makes it hard to walk or do daily activities.

Why Do People Need It?

Most people get knee replacements because of:
• Osteoarthritis (wear and tear of the joint over time)
• Rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disease)
• Injuries or accidents that damaged the knee

These conditions can cause:
• Constant knee pain
• Swelling and stiffness
• Trouble bending or straightening the knee
• Difficulty walking or climbing stairs

What Happens During the Surgery?
1. You’ll be given anesthesia (you won’t feel anything).
2. The surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone from the knee.
3. They insert artificial parts (made of metal, plastic, or both) to create a smooth, working joint.

The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours.

Recovery and Aftercare
• Most people stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days.
• You’ll start physical therapy right away to help your knee move again.
• It can take 6 weeks to 3 months to walk comfortably.
• Full recovery may take up to a year.

How Long Does a Knee Replacement Last?
• A well-done knee replacement can last 15 to 20 years or more.
• Staying active (but not overdoing it), keeping a healthy weight, and following doctor’s advice helps it last longer.

Risks to Know About

Like all surgeries, there are some risks:
• Infection
• Blood clots
• Pain or stiffness
• Loosening of the artificial joint over time

But serious problems are rare, and most people feel much better after recovery.

What is Fascia Lata Superior Capsular Reconstruction (SCR)?

Superior Capsular Reconstruction (SCR) is a surgical procedure used to treat massive rotator cuff tears in the shoulder — especially when those tears cannot be repaired directly.

In this procedure, a piece of tissue (usually a fascia lata graft from the patient’s own thigh or a donor) is used to replace the damaged shoulder tendon. This helps restore stability and function in the shoulder.
