“Will India be able to find a cure for its drug industry if Chinese API is banned?”

The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the third-largest in the world by volume. In terms of value, it is ranked 13. India accounts for 60 percent of the total drugs and medicines exported globally.

India has been importing an average of 68 percent of its and intermediates from China every year. According to the China Chamber of Commerce, a total of $5.65 billion worth of APIs were exported to India in 2019.

While the Indian government is encouraging local manufacturing, for instance the launching of in Hyderabad has been fast tracked to this year itself; still there are many hurdles which stand in the way, e.g.
- the production of many APIs involves high-energy microbial fermentation and high water and electricity consumption, which requires active steps towards development.
- APIs such as Tinidazole have huge emissions, norms need to be revised for local manufacturing
- of Chinese API all over the world gives them an edge in terms of capacity and price

Evidently, the impact on Indian exports is going to be more than that on the Chinese exports in the event of a complete ban.
