Understanding Celiac Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Management
Celiac Disease (CD) is a lifelong autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. It leads to inflammation of the small intestine, damaging its villi and causing malabsorption of essential nutrients.
Key Facts About Celiac Disease:
✔ Symptoms Vary by Age:
• Infants & Children: Diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, irritability, and growth impairment.
• Adults: Can be asymptomatic or experience bloating, diarrhea, anemia, neuropathy, and weight loss.
• Dermatitis Herpetiformis: An itchy skin condition linked to CD.
✔ Associated Conditions:
CD is linked to Type 1 Diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, osteoporosis, and even certain cancers if left untreated.
Those with unexplained iron deficiency anemia, thyroid disorders, or short stature should be tested.
The Importance of a Gluten-Free Diet (GFD):
✔ A strict, lifelong gluten-free diet is the only effective treatment.
✔ Avoid wheat, rye, and barley—including hidden sources in processed foods like sauces, soups, seasonings, and commercial meats.
✔ Safe foods include: Fresh meat, fish, dairy, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and gluten-free grains like rice, corn, and quinoa.
✔ Oats: Can be consumed in moderation if labeled gluten-free, as cross-contamination is common.
Nutritional Considerations:
⚡ CD patients are at risk for nutrient deficiencies (B vitamins, iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and fiber).
⚡ A Mediterranean diet with olive oil, nuts, fruits, and vegetables can support gut health.
⚡ Supplements, including vitamins A, D, E, K, and iron, may be necessary.
⚡ Lactose intolerance is common initially—dairy should be reintroduced gradually.
Emerging Treatments & Future Research:
✔ Scientists are exploring gluten-degrading enzymes, genetic modifications of grains, and immunotherapy as potential therapies.
✔ Any new treatment must be as safe and effective as a gluten-free diet.
🔹 Regular follow-ups with a dietitian ensure proper nutrition and prevent long-term complications.
