Few decades ago it was quite unimaginable how to save babies born prematurely but now science has evolved so much that we are able to save 24 weeks babies and even with birth weights as low as 600 gm with the skills of our neonatologists and our modern evidence based management of pregnancy. Today is World Prematurity Day & I would like to emphasise that modern approach to pregnancies that require premature delivery can save millions of lives & help parents to be parents even in this struggle to bring life on earth ❤️ It gives a lot of satisfaction to help in such situations 😊

On this World IVF Day as we cherish the revolution brought by science we also need to make sub fertile couples aware of some hard core truths as their expectations from IVF procedures are quite high:
Firstly the average success rate of IVF procedures are in the range of 35-40% which means that for 10 women undergoing IVF only 4 will become pregnant
Also since these pregnancies are high risk they need special attention as take home baby rates are still lower.
The message is since IVF is a costly procedure one should also be prepared to deliver these babies at higher centres with level 3 NICU & that too is quite costly!

Smoking in pregnancy has ill effects on both the mother & foetus, specifically low birth weight babies & complications like hypertension & shortness of breath in pregnancy to name a few. One should quit smoking while planning pregnancy as the initial days of development are most crucial for development of the baby & by the time one misses & doses a pregnancy test the developing baby is already 5 weeks old. Also pregnancy is an opportunity to quit smoking.

Bleeding in pregnancy is not so uncommon & many of these women will have a successful pregnancy with appropriate investigation & medications. But it’s an early sign of chance of miscarriage so needs early medical attention & intervention.
70% will have a successful pregnancy post bleeding in early pregnancy & if the baby is alive at 12 weeks & beyond the chance of live birth further increases!

Many women ignore bleeding after menopause & take it as normal. Unfortunately some of these women come to us after repeated episodes when disease have already progressed. This may be the first sign of Uterine (Womb) cancer & early diagnosis prevents disease progression & it’s one of the cancers which is completely treatable. Please don’t ignore post menopausal bleeding.

In today’s world many women prioritise careers over first pregnancy. So getting a pre pregnancy consultation before trying for pregnancy is a must to avoid complications during pregnancy & childbirth as these increases with age of would be mothers being on the higher side, beyond 30!
