✅Early Detection of Precancerous Cells: The primary benefit of a Pap smear is its ability to detect abnormal cells on the cervix before they develop into cancer. These abnormal cells, often caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are called precancerous cells (or dysplasia). By identifying these changes early, healthcare providers can intervene with treatments to remove or monitor them, significantly reducing the likelihood of cervical cancer ever developing. More than 95% of individuals treated for precancerous cells do not go on to develop cervical cancer.

✅Prevention of Cancer Progression: Cervical cancer typically develops very slowly, often taking many years for precancerous cells to turn into invasive cancer. This slow progression provides a critical window for detection and intervention through regular Pap smears. Yet another successful venture! Rare, technically challenging, advanced cancer of food pipe – successfully treated by advanced keyhole (minimally invasive) operation by robot! Only few hospitals in India do these types of operations.

A 70-year-old man came to us from Bangladesh with advanced oesophagus (food pipe) cancer. He had blood pressure (hypertension) and sugar problems (diabetes). With proper counselling and optimization before operation, we were able to take this challenge of treating this rare and advanced case. He was also very motivated and hopeful person and put his trust in me and my team at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata, India.
We know that in advanced complicated cases it is better to do advanced surgery like robotic surgery for better results and to avoid thoracic complications. Me and my team did a successful robotic oesophagus (food pipe) operation (technically called robotic ivor lewis oesophagectomy). This gentleman had a few hiccups along the way (pulmonary complications) due to age, previous chronic diseases and anticipated long operation, but with advanced intensive care patient smoothly recovered within a week. There were no dreaded complications like the leak of joint (anastomotic leak).

The gift of satisfaction was there when we first fed the patient with mouth and he swallowed with newly formed food pipe (gastric conduit) made from his own stomach.
