đŸŽ—ī¸Taking a *second opinion is extremely important in cancer treatment. It allows a patient to get an opinion from another doctor or medical team regarding their diagnosis and proposed treatment plan. The main reasons for this are discussed below:

✅Confirmation and Peace of Mind:
👉Verifying the Diagnosis
Cancer diagnosis can be very complex, and even a small mistake can have a major impact on treatment. A second opinion can confirm whether your diagnosis, cancer type, and stage are correct.
👉Gaining Reassurance:
If the second doctor agrees with your initial diagnosis and treatment plan, it will give you peace of mind. Your confidence in making the right decision about treating a serious illness will increase.

✅Different Expertise and Treatment Options:
👉Specialist Knowledge
Different doctors, especially those at large academic or specialized cancer centers, may have more experience with your specific type of cancer. They may be aware of the latest research or new treatment methods that are not widely available.
👉Alternative Methods
A second opinion can inform you about different types of treatment or a different sequence of treatments. For example, a doctor might suggest a less invasive surgery, a different type of chemotherapy, or a combination of multiple treatments that were not initially mentioned. This can lead to more effective treatment with fewer side effects and a better quality of life.

✅Avoiding Misdiagnosis and Overtreatment:
👉Although not very common, misdiagnosis can occur. Getting a second opinion can help catch errors in the initial diagnosis, which can help you avoid unnecessary or even harmful treatments.
👉A second opinion can sometimes lead a doctor to recommend a less aggressive treatment plan. For example, they might advise observation instead of immediate treatment or a less extensive surgery, which can improve quality of life and reduce risks and side effects.

đŸĨŧWhen to Get a Second Opinion

While a second opinion is often a good idea, it's particularly important in certain situations:
👨‍đŸĢCancer is of a rare or unusual type
👨‍đŸĢThe proposed treatment is a major or life-changing surgery
👨‍đŸĢThe diagnosis is unclear, or the pathology report is difficult to interpret.

I had the privilege of chairing a session and helping the core organizing committee at ABSICON 2025, an outstanding gathering of colleagues, researchers, and clinicians from across the field of Breast Surgery and Oncoplasty. The depth of knowledge, the quality of the presentations, and the collaborative spirit made this a truly inspiring event.

The session I chaired, brought together leading experts who shared their insights on how regional states are collaborating, solving problems and progressing to fight breast cancer in their states. The discussion that followed was equally engaging, highlighting both the challenges we face and the exciting opportunities on the horizon.

It was a pleasure to help facilitate the exchange of ideas and to witness the enthusiasm of so many colleagues committed to advancing patient care through research and innovation. Events like this remind me how powerful academic collaboration can be in driving progress.

A big thank you to the organizing committee for creating such a high-quality program and to all the speakers and attendees who contributed to the success of this session. I look forward to carrying these conversations forward and seeing how the ideas shared will shape our field in the years to come!

National Doctor's Day in India is celebrated every year on July 1st.
This day holds significant importance as it commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. National Doctor's Day in India was instituted by the Government of India in 1991 to honor Dr. B.C. Roy's immense contributions to the medical field and public service.

The theme for National Doctor's Day 2025 is "Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?", which emphasizes the need to care for doctors' mental health and acknowledge their humanity alongside their professional contributions.

đŸŽ—ī¸The Pap smear (Pap test or cervical cytology) is a crucial and often life-saving screening tool for preventing and detecting cervical cancer.

đŸĨŧHere's why it's so important:

✅Early Detection of Precancerous Cells: The primary benefit of a Pap smear is its ability to detect abnormal cells on the cervix before they develop into cancer. These abnormal cells, often caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), are called precancerous cells (or dysplasia). By identifying these changes early, healthcare providers can intervene with treatments to remove or monitor them, significantly reducing the likelihood of cervical cancer ever developing. More than 95% of individuals treated for precancerous cells do not go on to develop cervical cancer.

✅Prevention of Cancer Progression: Cervical cancer typically develops very slowly, often taking many years for precancerous cells to turn into invasive cancer. This slow progression provides a critical window for detection and intervention through regular Pap smears. Early treatment of abnormal cells can effectively prevent the disease from becoming more serious and difficult to treat.

✅Reduced Mortality Rates: Countries with widespread access to and participation in regular Pap smear screening programs have seen a dramatic decrease in the incidence and death rates from cervical cancer. This highlights the effectiveness of the test as a public health measure.

✅Overall Reproductive Health Check: While primarily a cervical cancer screening tool, Pap smears can also sometimes detect other issues like infections or inflammation in the cervix, contributing to overall reproductive health monitoring.

✅Complementary to HPV Testing:In many guidelines, especially for women over 30, the Pap smear is combined with an HPV test (co-testing). HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer. The HPV test identifies the presence of high-risk HPV strains, further enhancing the screening process.

đŸ‘¨â€âš•ī¸Screening Guidelines (General):

Guidelines can vary slightly by region and individual risk factors, but common recommendations include:

👉Ages 21-29: Pap smear every three years.
👉Ages 30-65: Co-testing (Pap smear and HPV test) every five years, or Pap smear alone every three years.
👉Over 65:Screening may no longer be needed if there's a history of regular, normal results and no other risk factors.
👉Special Circumstances: More frequent screening might be recommended for individuals with a history of abnormal Pap results, weakened immune systems (e.g., HIV infection), or exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES).

In essence, the Pap smear is a cornerstone of women's preventive healthcare, providing a simple yet highly effective way to prevent and detect cervical cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.
