It’s disheartening to see so called “celebrities “, “filmstars” , “icons” etc endorsing pan-masalas/ gutkha on television, radio, newspaper, hoardings and where not in the name of flavour elaichi (cardamom) of the same brands. Do you think they even take a morsel of the product they endorse on screen? I guess not.
Working in a government set up and dealing with cancer patients every day it’s devastating to see how families are ruined once a patient addicted to any form of to***co succumbs to the deadly disease called “cancer”, most common being the head & neck region.
Had this energy and effort being channelled to spreading the awareness on harmfulness of to***co, this country would have been a far better place to live in.
Spread the awareness, stop to***co today.

At times surgeons do make mistakes and just like a good friend should do, another surgeon steps in to rescue the patient as well as the fellow surgeon.

This patient was undergoing stapes surgery on the right ear and inadvertently got hit on the Facial nerve by mistake by a dear colleague. She landed up in a Grade V palsy post operative. It was decided to go for a Facial nerve decompression surgery after explaining the benefits of the procedure to the patient. Her husband was reluctant initially but finally gave in.

After a successful decompression surgery and 3months of physiotherapy the girl got back her facial functions. The husband was all smiles during her last visit.

There’s a nerve called Facial nerve which traverses through our ears on its passage from the brain to the face. The primary function this nerve is to control the muscles of the face concerned with facial expressions, two major functions out of which is the eye opening and maintaining the symmetrical smile.

In cases of fall from heights or road traffic accidents, this nerve gets injured if the person gets impact on the ears. This results in paralysis of the nerve.
Patients often come to us with one sided paralysis of the face, inability to close eyes, asymmetrical smile, inability to chew food on one side, watering from eyes etc,as evident from the picture below.

There’s is a surgical management available called Facial nerve decompression wherein the nerve is relieved off the pressure from the fractured bone pieces or at times a new nerve segment is grafted if there’s a big tear on the Facial nerve.

This patient presented with a Grade V paralysis on the Left side, things did not improve much after 10days of medical management. We decided to proceed for the surgery and the result was quite regarding.

Back on news after a while. Piece of peanut retrieved from 4 yr kid’s right lung which he accidentally aspirated 4days back.
It’s important that kids are given proper food training once breast feeding stops and parents start feeding them home cooked food around 6m-1yr age. They should be taught how to chew and eat, also make them understand what’s eatable and what’s non-eatables.

One of the most difficult Bronchoscopy done in recent times! 10yr kid accidentally aspirated this 1cm smooth plastic bead while playing with it which got lodged into right bronchus.
It was so big that it couldn’t be retrieved beyond vocal cord, tracheotomy was done to get it out. So the patient couldn’t speak temporarily. After couple of days of observation, tracheostomy tube was removed and kid is doing good as you can see in the video.
