What Happens if an Indian Dies Abroad?
Losing a loved one is always painful β even more so when it happens abroad. If an Indian national passes away overseas, there are specific steps to bring the body or ashes back home respectfully.
β
Death Registration Abroad
The death must be registered with the Indian Embassy or Consulate. Youβll need:
-Original passport of the deceased
- Local death certificate
- Autopsy/Post-mortem report
- Cremation or burial certificate
- Your ID and application form
β
Body Repatriation to India
To transport the deceased back home, the Embassy provides a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Documents required include:
- Death certificate (local + embassy issued)
- Canceled passport
- Public health letter (non-communicable disease)
- Embalming certificate
- Flight and consignee details
β
Transporting Ashes to India
A separate NOC is issued for ashes. You'll need:
- Cremation certificate
- Certificate of packing
- Applicant & deceasedβs passport info
ποΈ No fee is charged by the Embassy for these services.
