Thank you Mahuya Santra , and West Bengal Commision for Protection of Child Rights for covering this important topic about creating awareness about male sexual abuse, through the articles in their magazine Hullor.
It is through awareness and education, can we truly bring about change. Parents , teachers and all adults involved in the care of children need to understand how vulnerable young boys can be, and how vigilant we need to be about their safety. Most boys and grown up men are afraid to talk for fear of humiliation, mockery, and being told that he is a sissy and was not man enough to fight back or allow this to happen. Patriarchy can be the biggest enemy of men, in such situations. And the effect of this trauma can scar the person for life.
We need to have more open discussions, teach young boys also about good and bad touch, just like we have started teaching our young girls. Unless we ourselves are educated and aware, we will only add to our child's trauma by not validating them, or taking appropriate measures, such reporting, under POCSO. If we let them suffer silently it can often end with disastrous consequences , from very low self confidence, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, sexual difficulties and on the other extreme, to perpetrators sexual violence.
And when you get the right kind of support , you can be healed enough become a survivor from a victim. Like Abhik Mukherjee, who changed his profession to become a Psychologist so that he can help others who go through this kind of trauma.
