Chromosomal Aneuploidy Screening in Pregnancy: Double Marker Test Explained
🎙️ In this video, Dr. Milli Banerjee, Genetic Counselor at the Institute of Fetal Medicine (IFM), Kolkata, provides a detailed explanation of the

Double Marker Test, a crucial part of first-trimester screening for chromosomal abnormalities. She discusses how this test assesses the risk of conditions like

Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13).

🔍 Key Highlights from the Video:

What is the Double Marker Test? This test, done after the 12th week of pregnancy, measures two specific markers—PAPP-A and Beta-HCG—from the mother's blood.

Combined Screening: Dr. Banerjee clarifies that this isn't just a simple blood test. It's a "combined screening" that also requires an ultrasound to measure the baby's

Nuchal Translucency (NT) value.

Factors Affecting Risk: The final risk calculation considers various maternal factors, including body weight, ethnicity, and the presence of diabetes.

Understanding the Results: The report provides three types of risk: biochemical, age, and final. The final risk is the most important to consider.

Low Risk: A low-risk result means the chance of aneuploidy is very low, generally requiring no further action.

Intermediate Risk: If the report shows an intermediate risk, Dr. Banerjee recommends a Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) test. This blood test provides a more comprehensive screening without any risk to the pregnancy.

High Risk: A high-risk result indicates a higher probability of a chromosomal issue, and an invasive diagnostic test like amniocentesis is recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

👶 Early screening empowers parents with essential information, allowing for timely medical and emotional support.

🤰 “ARSA in Pregnancy – Should You Be Worried?”

Dr. Seetha Ramamurthy Pal, Consultant – Fetal Medicine at IFM Kolkata, explains what it means when an Aberrant Right Subclavian Artery (ARSA) is reported in your anomaly scan.

🔹 ARSA is a blood vessel variation that arises from the aorta.
🔹 In most cases, it is simply a normal variant and not harmful.
🔹 Rarely, it may be linked to chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) or genetic syndromes.
🔹 If your first-trimester screening is low risk and there are no other abnormal findings, the chances of concern are very low.
🔹 If ARSA is seen with other markers or high-risk results, your doctor may recommend further tests such as genetic consultation or amniocentesis.

👉 Don’t panic — ARSA is often harmless. The right guidance will come from your fetal medicine specialist and, if needed, a geneticist.
