Dhan-teras — the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) — is celebrated as an invocation of prosperity and abundance in life, encompassing both health and wealth (dhan).
According to the scriptures, this is the sacred day when Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean carrying the pot of nectar (Amrita Kalasha) during the great Samudra Manthana — the churning of the milky ocean. This divine nectar symbolized the gifts of health, vitality, immortality (a-mrita), and abundance — treasures that arose only after the ocean’s impurities had been churned out and purified.
On a deeper spiritual level, Dhanteras reminds us that when we engage in the churning of the mind through reflection, discipline, and inner awareness, our impurities and limitations surface and are released. As the mind becomes purified, the flame of consciousness shines ever more brightly within. The act of lighting an external lamp on this day is thus symbolic — it reflects the awakening of the inner light that dispels darkness and illumines the path to true prosperity.
Happy Dhanteras! May this day bring prosperity, longevity, health, wealth and wisdom to you and family and all the near and dear ones.
