India has seen a steady rise in cancer cases over the past decade — but what is truly alarming, as highlighted in the recently published Lok Sabha data, is that cancer-related deaths have increased even faster than new diagnoses.

According to the report, cancer mortality in India has risen by nearly 29%, outpacing the growth in new cases.
This widening gap is not just a statistic, it reflects late detection, delayed treatment, unequal access to care, and a growing burden of preventable cancers.

As a surgical oncologist, this trend is deeply concerning.

Early-stage cancers have significantly better outcomes, yet a large proportion of patients still reach us when the disease is already advanced.

Their is an urgent need for:
• Strong screening programs
• Timely referral to oncology specialists
• Greater awareness of early warning signs
• Better access to multidisciplinary cancer care
• Community-level education to reduce stigma and delays

Cancer is treatable — early detection remains our strongest weapon.

Let us work together to build a more aware, proactive, and cancer-conscious India.
