ANTENATAL
& POSTNATAL PHYSIOTHERAPY(CHAPTER TEN)
WHEN TO START POST NATAL EXERCISES :
Two days after normal delivery, mother can get off the bed to walk around & do post natal exercises.
Frequency- Low impact exercises
Intensity- Mild to moderate exercises are recommended
Duration- 30 minutes of exercise per session per day

In case of caesarean section, mother should not begin until the advice is sought from a doctor.
DO’S BEFORE STARTING POST NATAL EXERCISE PROGRAMME :
Wear loose supportive clothing
Stable environment
Do not exercise on with a full stomach
Do not exercise alone
Low impact exercises is preferable during exercise

Fatigues, nausea, constipation, back pain and swelling reduces.
Less insomnia, stress, anxiety and depression

Tips to Improve Circulation :
Foot and Ankle Exercises
Daily physical exercise (example: ½ walking)
Lymphatic drainage, massage with physiotherapist
Sleeping with legs elevated
Avoid static positions for too long
Put some cold water from below to the top of your legs at the end of the shower
Avoid shower/bath too warm
Wear larger size clothes
Wear support stocking for some cases with medical advice

Strengthening Pelvic Floor Muscles :
Tighten back passage muscles as if you trying to stop a flow of urine.
Slow exercises – tighten, hold (aim for up to 10 seconds) and relax.
Fast exercises – tighten and relax quickly. Repeat up to 10 times.
How often? – Always do a mixture of fast and slow exercises while seated on toilet seat after you have emptied your bladder.
Protect your pelvic floor: Make a habit now of always pulling up your pelvic floor before you lift, carry, push or pull light to moderate weights. Lift and squeeze as you cough or sneeze.
