Changing a colostomy bag involves carefully removing the old pouch, cleaning the stoma and surrounding skin, and applying a new pouch. It's important to follow proper hygiene practices and use appropriate supplies to prevent skin irritation and infection.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Gather Your Supplies:
A new colostomy bag (1-piece or 2-piece system with wafer)
Pouch clip (if needed)
Scissors (if needed)
Clean towels or paper towels
Stoma powder, paste, or ring seal (depending on your system)
Skin wipes
Measuring card and pen
Adhesive remover (optional)
Trash bags
Washcloth and warm water
Hand sanitizer or soap and water
2. Prepare the Area:
Choose a clean, well-lit area near a sink and toilet.
Empty the old pouch into the toilet.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
3. Remove the Old Pouch:
If using a 2-piece system, detach the pouch from the wafer.
For a 1-piece system, gently peel the wafer away from the skin, starting from the top.
Use adhesive remover if needed to help loosen the adhesive.
Dispose of the old pouch in a trash bag.
4. Clean the Stoma and Skin:
Gently wipe the stoma and surrounding skin with a damp washcloth or skin wipes.
Dry the area thoroughly with a clean towel.
If using stoma powder, apply it to any moist areas around the stoma.
5. Apply the New Pouch:
If using a 2-piece system, attach the new wafer to the skin, ensuring a snug fit around the stoma.
If using a 1-piece system, carefully center the pouch opening over the stoma and press the wafer firmly to the skin.
If using a drainable pouch, close the end securely.
Press firmly around the edges of the wafer or pouch to ensure a good seal.
6. Final Steps:
Ensure the pouch is securely attached and properly sealed.
Dispose of any used supplies in the trash bag.
Wash your hands again.
Important Considerations:
Frequency:
Disposable colostomy bags are typically changed every 1-3 days or as needed. Drainable bags may be emptied throughout the day and changed every few days.
Skin Care:
Pay close attention to the skin around the stoma for any signs of irritation or infection.
