A Remarkable Thumb Reimplantation Surgery in a High-Risk Patient
Mr. Majumdar, a 69-year-old gentleman with a history of heart disease and diabetes, recently suffered a traumatic accident when he was hit by a car. Tragically, his thumb was amputated in the incident. To make matters more complex, he was on blood thinners, which led to significant bleeding following the injury.
Despite the challenges posed by his underlying medical conditions, our dedicated team of doctors led by Dr.Akhilesh Agarwal renowned plastic surgeon decided to proceed with immediate reimplantation of the thumb — a highly specialized and delicate surgery.
In this intricate procedure, every structure of the thumb had to be meticulously reconstructed. The bone was stabilized using fine wires. The most critical and technically demanding aspect involved the repair of blood vessels, each less than 1 mm in diameter, which was performed under a surgical microscope to restore blood flow. Additionally, the fine nerves of the thumb were repaired with utmost precision to regain sensation.
“One of the biggest challenges we faced was managing the patient's ongoing risk of bleeding due to his blood thinner medication. However, with vigilant monitoring and careful surgical technique, we successfully navigated this risk” said Dr.Agarwal
The thumb plays a crucial role in hand function, and its loss can lead to significant disability. We are pleased to share that Mr. Majumdar has been discharged and is currently undergoing physiotherapy.
We remain hopeful that through dedicated rehabilitation, we will be able to restore meaningful hand function to this courageous elderly gentleman.
