"The current practice of declaring others infidels (takfir) and sinners (tafsiq), which has been prevalent among Muslims for a long time, is entirely baseless and has no connection to Islamic law. This condemnable practice emerged during the Abbasid era and continued for several centuries under the label of 'deviant sects' (firaq-e-dallah). It reached such an extent that, according to these rulings, no one in the Muslim community remained a believer or a Muslim.
Eventually, scholars reached a unanimous decision to put an end to this practice of takfir and tafsiq. With collective agreement, they declared: **"La nukaffiru ahadan min ahl al-qiblah"** (We will not declare as an infidel anyone who prays facing the Qiblah).
This is the correct stance on the matter. There is no evidence of such a practice of excommunication (takfiri activity) in the early blessed generations of Islam. The trend of declaring others infidels originated in ancient Iraq during the Abbasid period, introduced by the theologians (mutakallimun). However, later, the firmly grounded scholars (ulama-e-rasikhin) rejected it and reached a unanimous verdict that under no circumstances should the people of the Qiblah be declared infidels."
