The main focus for a mother after having a baby is to 1) produce good quality & sufficient quantity of milk for her baby, 2) regain her health & fitness. ⁣

The first can be achieved by a systematic inclusion of galactagogues (foods that boost milk production) in the diet, and the second, by making sure you don’t add unnecessary calories along with these galactagogues. ⁣

My post partum breakfast is pure love ❤️ ! Sabudana Kheer in the morning provides energy (much needed for the first few weeks of frequent feedings), boosts milk (sabudana is a galactagogue) & is super tasty when you’re on medications & nothing tastes good. ⁣

RECIPE: Soak 4tsp sabudana in 1 cup water over night. In the morning, add 1 cup milk and 1 tsp mishri/khand/ gud to it and boil it for 2 mins. Pour in a bowl, add shaved almonds, pistachios and saffron (kesar). Enjoy hot!⁣

This is also great for growing kids who get drained by the end of the day & underweight people. Not suitable for diabetics. ⁣

The best part about Holi is that for one day you don’t give a s #*t about getting dirty or messy. We sit for hours covered in color and water and in some cases even ketchup, eggs & cola 🙈. ⁣

Borrowing from that idea, why not let your toddlers & children enjoy foods and drinks like in the old days- with their hands instead of cutlery. Yup, it’ll be messy and there will also be some wastage, but the fun your kids will have exploring the food and developing motor skills, it will be worth it.⁣

In fact, join them if you can. Watermelon, mangoes, apples, oranges etc etc. Chuck the fork 🍴. Sit on the ground, roll up your sleeves and get those hands & mouth dirty. 😜⁣

Just remember to wash your hands properly before eating. ⁣

Happy Holi everyone!!! ⁣

The cardinal rule of any healthy diet recently has been to increase protein intake. For any issue, the answer seems to be high protein diet.⁣

In pregnancy though, this rule holds true. You’re making a human inside you. Logic says you’ll need more protein along with other essential nutrients. ⁣

The problem however arises when the mother gets aversions or can’t eat protein rich foods due to nausea, bloating etc. Which is exactly what happened to me for the first 5 months of the pregnancy. ⁣

I couldn’t stand khichdi, quinoa, legumes, paneer, ragi, amaranth etc (things I used to love pre pregnancy). The smell of eggs would send me running to the toilet. The only thing I could stand and could keep down was Dal & Rice which I ate almost everyday along with one vegetable (mostly potato not gonna lie). ⁣

When you’re suffering from pregnancy nausea & struggling to keep food down along with bloating and constipation, a ‘correct' diet is far from your mind. You just want to eat what suits you and makes you feel good. Usually it’s carbs & that’s okay. ⁣

BUT, when & if you do start to feel better in the later months, it’s important to introduce protein back to your diet. Not just for your baby but for yourself too. In my case, I was happy to note that I could eat eggs again in a certain preparation so I started having 1 free range egg 5 times a week. Along with that I started oats, chillas, lassi, chhena, legumes, cereal pulse combinations as well as protein powder on days I don’t eat eggs. ⁣

Khichdi & quinoa I’m still struggling with unfortunately ☹️. ⁣

What were your aversions during pregnancy? Comment below. I hope this post was helpful. ⁣

Happy New Year folks! 🎉⁣

We have no idea what 2022 has in store for us (given the sh*tshow that 2021 was 🙄) and while we can’t do much about external circumstances, there’s nothing stopping us from making things that are in our control better. ⁣

For example: ⁣
1. Being decent & kind to one another. ⁣
2. Not judging people for things that we don’t understand. ⁣
3. Taking care of our health. Physical & mental.⁣
4. Taking care of our family’s health. ⁣
5. Being environmentally conscious. Reuse, reduce, recycle. ⁣
6. Conserving energy & water. ⁣
7. Donating to charitable causes.⁣
8. Being sensitive to people’s struggles.⁣
9. Enriching our own minds by gaining more knowledge & learning new skills. ⁣
10. Not letting social media use us. ⁣

These are very simple things to focus on even when everything else feels out of control. Sending all of you much love & cheer in the new year. I hope it brings you joy, happiness & success ❤️❤️⁣

Cons: Processed. High in Carbs.⁣

Pros: Delicious. Ate in moderation. No guilt. Balanced the rest of the meals. ⁣

Don’t be afraid of food. Take that to the next year if nothing else. Choose well. Make better decisions. Prioritise your health. ⁣

It’s fitting that my last post of the year is of mini burgers. 😂 ⁣

Having a green vegetable with my rice is as instinctive for me now as putting toothpaste on my toothbrush. I don’t know any other way to eat it anymore. You think I was like this before? Nope. It always used to be rice, dal and potato for me.⁣

It took conscious, consistent practice to change this habit and now it’s a lifestyle. Does that mean I don’t eat rice, dal & potato anymore? Not at all. But I balance it out. Deprivation leads to bingeing & I don’t promote that. ⁣

This is exactly what we persevere for with our clients. Healthy habits introduced systematically & followed consistently until they become a part of your normal routine. Its the only thing that works long term. ⁣

PS: I know I’ve been away from social media for some time but it has been a much needed break. There’s already so much information out here that sometimes it feels like we’re all repeating the same thing again & again. But I appreciate all of you who msgd me & said that you missed me. Big hug to you 🤗. I have missed chatting with you guys too. ⁣

Pictured above: Normal rice + Chana Dal + Barbatti cooked with traditional spices in minimum ghee & oil. Quantity is decided based on my hunger without overeating. ⁣

Hope you guys are enjoying the festive season with your love ones! Use your discretion when eating out. That’s all I’m gonna say without sounding preachy 😋.⁣

Wish you all a very Happy 75th Independence Day! ⁣🇮🇳

There is a lot of evil, oppression, brutality & violence in the world. Our beautiful country included. If we see injustice & still stay silent, we’re part of the problem. Raise your voice against inhumanity. ⁣

Let’s make our country truly a paradise for ALL its people. ⁣

We’re always so scared for the word fat. Even if it’s good & beneficial for us. I’ve listed the fats that we should include in our diet for the optimal functioning of the body. ⁣

What we need to remember is that fats are high in calories so should be eaten in moderation. You can’t be eating too much of it. Secondly, fats in the form of hydrogenated fats, refined oils, processed butters & cheeses should be avoided. ⁣

I’ve listed items which are easily available and can be incorporated in your diet. DM me if you have any questions. Save this post 👍.⁣

Heart disease is the number one cause of death and a silent epidemic among Indians, especially Indian men. 50% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under 50 years of age and 25% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur under 40 years of age. Yes, read that again! It’s shocking & depressing but true.⁣

The problem with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels) is that it can sneak up on you. It's not something that happens overnight. ⁣

Many people have metabolic syndrome for five to 10 years before it even shows up. It may show up as one of the risk factors I’ve mentioned here but for some reason, that alarm bell in our brain doesn't go off. Maybe because we have normalised these symptoms as many people have it. So more often than not, people do not change their diet or lifestyle. Or maybe the bell does ring, but they think that they'll start these new lifestyle habits later, when its more convenient. But by then, in most cases, it’s too little too late. ⁣

Check if you fall under the ‘risk’ category & take steps immediately to improve your health against heart disease. All the best. ⁣
