Kolkata Sanved is a women-led pioneer in the field of dance movement therapy (DMT) for healing, empowerment & psycho-social rehabilitation of marginalised populations. We use DMT as a tool for promoting holistic well-being & enhancement of quality of life. Founded in 2004 by Ashoka Fellow Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, a sociologist and dance activist, Kolkata Sanved has expanded the notions of dance and t

raditional rehabilitation programs. Through our groundbreaking program, survivors of trafficking and violence release trauma, develop confidence and identify their own potentials as human beings rather than as victims. At its core, the program allows survivors to develop specific life-skills important for their reintegration through a non-threatening and culturally familiar medium.

Planning with Purpose

Kolkata Sanved is at a special moment in its journey — looking back on two decades of transformative work and envisioning the path for the next decade. This reflection is not just about milestones, but about the people whose belief that dance changes lives has shaped who we are today.

This week began with a truly inspiring presence — our beloved friend, guide, and mentor Sachin Sachdeva — who visited our Kolkata office on Tuesday, 12th August, and spent an entire day with the team. From deep conversations on leadership and strategy to thought-provoking explorations of why a philosophical plan matters just as much — if not more — than a business plan, the day reminded us of the deeper purpose and guiding philosophy behind our work.

As we step into the future, we carry these conversations in our hearts — grounded in purpose and guided by philosophy, moving towards a vision of change, care, and creativity.

An Inspiring Adda at Kolkata Sanved on 7th August

On 7th August, our movement circle at Kolkata Sanved came alive with an informal yet deeply enriching adda with Dr. Pallabi Chakravorty, Stephen Lang Professor of Performing Arts. Department of Dance, Swarthmore College, US.

Together with our Dance Movement Therapy practitioners and team members, we explored the worlds of Dance, the Body, and Body Politics, as Dr. Chakravorty shared her own journey of experimenting with Indian classical dance — Kathak.

Through her lens, we travelled along a path of research, exploration, and self-discovery, witnessing how tradition can be reimagined, and how movement can be a space for questioning.

Moments like these remind us that dance is not just art — it’s dialogue, resistance, and a way of knowing ourselves and the world.

Apna Sahar at Kolkata Sanved on July 30th

On 30th July, we welcomed back our Apna Sahar — poet, professor, long-time friend, and  well-wisher Sahar Romani.

It was a joy to share space with you again and to journey through your words. Thank you for bringing your poetry into our circle — for weaving emotions, memories, and dreams that linger long after the verses end.

Your poetic journey reminds us that creative writing and poetry are both a mirror and a bridge — connecting hearts, voices, and worlds.

This Friendship Day, we celebrate the friendships that heal.
At Kolkata Sanved, we see every session, every circle, and every shared rhythm as a space where trust is built—where friendship becomes a force for recovery, resilience, and change.

From survivor-led peer support to the solidarity between practitioners and participants, these relationships are rooted in care, empathy, and mutual respect.

Friendship is not just a bond—it’s a reminder that no one heals alone.

Exploitation does not end when trafficking does.
It lives on-in the body, in memory, in silence.

At Kolkata Sanved, we stand against exploitation by addressing its long-term impact through Dance Movement Therapy.
We work with survivors to rebuild autonomy, restore dignity, and create spaces of healing and leadership.

On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we reaffirm our commitment to trauma-informed care and survivor-led change.

Let’s move from awareness to action. Together, let’s stand against exploitation.

Perspective Building Institute | Day 5 - critical thinking isn’t just a skill.
Theme: Seeing the Unseen – System Analysis and Critical Thinking

As we moved into Day 5 of the Kolkata Sanved Perspective Building Institute, we stepped into deeper waters—where reflection meets action, and observation becomes a tool for transformation.

Today was all about pausing, stepping back, and truly looking at the bigger picture. Together, we explored the structures , systems and how they silently influence our beliefs, thoughts, behaviours, and realities.

we asked:
What lies beneath what we see?
Who creates the system—and who benefits from it?
How can we shift, or reimagine these narratives?

From the body to society, we trained our lens to see, observe, ask, and reflect. This is where transformation begins—not with immediate answers, but with the courage to question and the patience to listen.

Day 3 Highlights: Power, Equity & Inequality
Perspective Building Institute

Day 3 at the Kolkata Sanved Perspective Building Institute was a deep dive into the complex realities of power, equity, and inequality - explored through personal stories, lived experiences, and collective reflection. Learning from an incredible panel of thought leaders: Anindya Hajra, Seema Sreeniwas, Gargee Guha, Anindita Majumder, and Koyel Ghosh.

The day unfolded through a dynamic panel discussion, followed by engaging World Café-style conversations in smaller groups on:
Gender-Based Violence
Power, Privilege & Oppression
Agency & Resistance
The Spectrum of Violence in Everyday Life

Together, we reflected deeply on our own behaviors, actions, and practices in relation to power, equity, and inequality.

The day ended with a reflective question that continues to echo within us: How can we question dominant narratives and redefine power, structures, and systems rooted in inequality?
