WORLD HEMOPHILIA DAY 2026
“First Step to Care: Early Diagnosis, Better Lives”
From: PG PATHLABS & SCAN CLINIC
What is Hemophilia?
Hemophilia is a hereditary X-linked bleeding disorder caused by deficiency of clotting factors:
* Hemophilia A → Factor VIII deficiency
* Hemophilia B → Factor IX deficiency
This leads to prolonged bleeding, spontaneous hemorrhage, and joint damage (hemophilic arthropathy).
Why Early Diagnosis Matters (2026 Focus)
* Prevents life-threatening bleeds (intracranial, GI)
* Reduces long-term disability
* Enables early prophylaxis
* Improves quality of life and survival
Many patients in India remain undiagnosed or diagnosed late
Key Diagnostic Tests
At PG PATHLABS & SCAN CLINIC, we support early detection with:
* CBC (Complete Blood Count)
* PT (Prothrombin Time) – usually normal
* aPTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) – prolonged
* Factor Assays (VIII, IX levels) – confirm diagnosis
* Inhibitor Screening (Bethesda assay)
* Genetic Testing (for carrier detection & prenatal diagnosis)
Advances in Treatment (Updated 2026)
* Recombinant Factor Replacement Therapy
* Extended Half-Life Factors
* Non-factor therapy (e.g., Emicizumab)
* Gene Therapy (emerging long-term solution in selected patients)
* Home-based prophylaxis programs
Who Should Be Tested?
* Family history of bleeding disorders
* Male child with easy bruising / joint swelling
* Prolonged bleeding after:
* Circumcision
* Tooth extraction
* Minor trauma
Prevention & Care
* Early prophylactic therapy
* Avoid NSAIDs (increase bleeding risk)
* Regular physiotherapy for joint protection
* Vaccination against Hepatitis B
* Multidisciplinary care approach
