ICH is a trust run non-profit organization serving the children of the society beyond all means over the last 70 years. Institute of Child Health – A Legacy of Compassionate Pediatric Care
The Institute of Child Health (ICH), Kolkata, holds the distinction of being India’s first dedicated pediatric institute, envisioned and established by Dr. K.C. The foundation stone was laid on 12 August 1954, and with support from the Corporation of Calcutta, construction began on 14 April 1955. The outpatient services, equipped with full-fledged laboratory facilities, were launched on 23 January 1956, followed by the inauguration of the inpatient department, including 50 beds and neonatal care, on 15 June 1956. The institute was formally inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India, on January 16, 1957 — a landmark moment that heralded a new era for pediatric healthcare in the country. Dr. Chaudhuri’s vision was far ahead of its time. He imagined not just a hospital, but a comprehensive center that integrated preventive, promotive and curative care, with a strong focus on teaching and research. He introduced the nation to the concept of “positive and total child care,” recognizing the child in their entirety — emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. Today, ICH continues to carry forward this noble legacy, committed to delivering holistic, affordable, and quality healthcare to children.
