Mental Health Foundation, Kolkata was formed in 2010. Ever since then, one of our key areas of work was with children and you people with developmental disorders, which includes Autism Spectrum Condition. 2nd April is designated as World Autism Awareness Day as designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007. As we have grown older as an organisation, the children and young people we have been working with, have grown in experience, skills and resilience with us. One of our key concern has been how to generate employability and independence for them. So, when a group of parents with children with developmental disorders proposed to run a cafe in our clinic, we said yes!
A short write up about their experience is described

In April 2024 ‘Cafable’ was created a tea and snack kiosk ,in a quiet corner of the clinic , stands our modest tea kiosk. Yet, this is no ordinary stall—within it, a small band of neurodivergent adults found not only purpose but also a voice and a sense of belonging creating an identity for them. We had an overwhelming response from the consultants and clients of the clinic.
Often tired after long hours of consultation a sip of tea or coffee and a small bite of buttery cookies is simply relaxing.
There is Pritha, a gentle and kind-hearted woman with Down’s syndrome, whose smile could brighten the gloomiest of days. Then there is Pinaki, whose passion for remembering choice of customers is well known. His warmth is infectious prompting many more to have their breakfast while coming for consultations with the team of mental health professionals.
And Srilekha, her diligent habit of serving on time keeps the kitchen team on toe and customers know it and they miss her on days of leave. The truest magic of the kiosk is revealed on hot summer afternoons. When the heat is sultry, and the world outside grows hot and sweaty, the kiosk remains a cool corner to have a sip of cold beverages. Inside, young and adults gather, sipping lemonade, sharing tales, and finding solace in each other’s company.
For the workers, the kiosk is more than just a place of labour. It is a sanctuary where they take pride in their work, where they are treated with dignity and affection, not for what they cannot do, but for what they have to give. Together, they have created something truly wonderful—something that transcended their challenges and brought their community together.
The idea to expand the kiosk's reach came to one parent one morning while watching the patients and staff enjoy the comforting cups of tea and coffee he and his team prepared. "Why not bring this warmth to others?" he thought. "Why not share these moments of connection and comfort at other events where people gather?" And so, with the same spirit of care and inclusion that had guided the clinic kiosk, the Cafable began serving its beverages and snacks at various conferences, meetings, and community events.
The team—Pritha, Pinaki ,Srilekha —were thrilled by the new venture. Jyotishko, Tathagata, Nilabha joined them. Their roles had already grown important at the clinic, and now they would get to share their talents and kindness with an even wider audience. They were no longer just serving tea to those in need of a comforting cup; they were becoming part of larger gatherings, offering moments of respite to busy professionals and curious visitors alike.
People recognise it as a symbol of kindness, inclusion, and quality. The kiosk represents more than just refreshments; it represents the power of a shared moment, of slowing down to appreciate the simple joys of life—good tea, good company, and a welcoming place to rest.
And so, the Cafable continues to flourish, whether nestled by the clinic or bustling at conferences and events. It was a place where every cup of tea, every coffee, every muffin, and every conversation was served with care and warmth. It became a place where everyone, regardless of their background or challenge, could find a little peace in the midst of their busy day.

Mental Health Foundation is organising a Workshop titled "Parenting Playbook- Unlock Positive Behaviors" on 13th July 2024, Saturday 6pm onwards at Mental Health Foundation, Kolkata (mhfkolkata.com). It will be an interactive session for 1.5 hours.

It is important to develop strategies for parents to use to increase the behavior they want to see in their child. These will need to be individualized to his/her particular needs and challenges. These often are helpful in building a sense of pride in accomplishments and personal responsibility, and a sense of what is expected. This will reduce the anxiety and reactivity that results in aggression or other behaviors. The workshop will deal with Autism Behavior Support, strategies and looking beyond the behavior.

The cost for the workshop is Rs 1200. Kindly don't forward, its only for a small group of parents who have been handpicked depending on child requirement. Speakers are Dr. Manisha Bhattacharya and Ranjana Chakraborty.

MHF is a service led organisation aiming to provide Mental Health and Social Care services to those who are in need of care and support.

World Mental Health Day Awareness

The World Health Organization (WHO) conceptualizes mental health as a “state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.
We believe that these are basic needs that ALL individuals, irrespective of their status, are looking for. Right to good mental health encompasses domains which are not restricted to the fields of psychiatry and psychology. It is an essential component human rights!
A human rights-based approach to universal mental health has many aspects. We want to highlight two of those -:
1.ensuring the availability of (and access to) quality mental health care services, and creating an enabling environment through efforts to reduce stigma, discrimination, violence and inequity.
2. a rights-based approach is the individual's agency. The person is the expert – is trying to the best of his or her abilities to survive in their own environment.
We, at Mental Health Foundation, Kolkata believe that :-
1. Mental Illness should never be a reason for persons with mental illness to be excluded from community participation and community activities.
2. Let us resolve to make our Mental Health a priority. This includes all of us, both neuro-typical and neuro-divergents!
3. People from every corner of the world, be it from the remotest places to densely populated areas, need equal access to mental health services.
4. it is not upto individuals alone, but organizations to make it easy for persons with mental illnesss to access fair opportunities.
5. Every individual has inherent dignity. Access to mental health services is crucial in upholding this dignity. Let go of shame. Ensure dignity
6. Let us promote awareness and protect our rights and rights of others. With rights, come responsibilities. So let us embrace our journeys and heal our minds.

We strongly believe in the motto that right to well being does not discriminate on the basis of caste, creed, gender, socioeconomics, neurodiversity.
Hence we stand by the slogan “Nothing about us, without us”

On 26th and 27th of March 2023, Mental Health Foundation along with Milarepa foundation, and Mon Foundation participated in a Mental Health Camp in Mirik region of the Darjeeling district. MHF, Kolkata joined hands with Milarepa Foundation in Darjeeling District to create awareness on mental health and developmental disorders include speech and hearing impairment. Three members of our team, Satabhisha Chatterjee and Anupam Das, Consultant Clinical Psychologists and Mr Santanu Mukherjee, Speech and Language Therapist, travelled to North Bengal and worked in local community centres to treat, screen and spread awareness on mental illness and developmental disorders. We were hosted by Salamander Tourism and ACT (Association for Conservation and Tourism) at Manju Camp and Tabakoshi respectively. The mental health camp was held with the intention to build awareness and bring psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and associated facilities to the people in the villages. The experience exposed us to the reality of lack of services and awareness in rural communities. The response was heartening. It is a tiny step but we have have started the journey in collaborative community work, in the community. The response to community sensitisation was heartening. Local NGO's have pitched in with promises of logistical support in the future. The long term aim is to build a more self sustaining system with barefoot counsellors with regular telemedicine and periodic on-ground support Jai R Ram Sreemoyee Sen Ram

Copycat su***de or su***de contagion, has been studied since 1978. Multiple su***des have been observed to follow media report or thoughtless coverage around su***de of one person. Especially if, the death is of a well known person. Su***de is a complex phenomenon. Generalising the causes always misses the complexity of the issue. There are guidelines regarding responsible reporting Dr Sujit Sarkhel, Consultant Psychiatrist at MHF, Kolkata writes about these concerns in a recent article in Ei Samay ( a Bangla newspaper). He is also a member of the Su***de Prevention Sub-committee of Indian Psychiatric Society.

Today is World Autism Day. We know it is cliched to celebrate one day for an issue which requires attention for 365 days in a year. However, today it gives us, at MHF Kolkata, an opportunity to acknowledge a debt. A debt we owe to persons with Autism and their families. We had scientific information about Autism through our training but our deep and long, meaningful association with families and persons with Autism have transformed information into knowledge and wisdom. It has made us more aware about adaptability, courage and resilience and enabled us to learn what families and persons with Autism are capable of. In many ways, it restores our faith in humanity, where small acts of courage, brings about change. In solidarity and with deep respect, let us acknowledge and celebrate diversity!
