A "day 3 embryo transfer" refers to transferring embryos into the uterus on the third day after egg retrieval, when the embryo is at the cleavage stage with roughly 4-8 cells, and is considered beneficial for situations where there are limited embryos or concerns about their development to the blastocyst stage, allowing earlier implantation in the uterine environment; however, it may also result in a higher risk of multiple pregnancies due to potentially transferring more embryos compared to a day 5 transfer where only the most viable blastocysts are chosen.
