Mr RPP, an 85 year old gentleman came for consultation after he suffered from a domestic fall, following which he injured his left wrist. He is known diabetic, hypertensive, hypothyroid, and also has ischemic heart disease.
On further evaluation it was found that he had suffered from a distal end of the ulna fracture along his left wrist joint. He was immediately immobilized using a plaster slab, along with pain medications and calcium, vitamin D 3 supplementation.
After a month his repeat xray showed a uniting fracture with a good amount of bone formation. His plaster was removed and he was allowed to undergo exercises for a good functional outcome.
After nearly 2 months, he had gained a full painless functional outcome along his left wrist joint, with no Residual deformity.
Thus osteoporotic single bone fracture around the wrist in an elderly patient with multiple comorbidities can be treated conservatively with near normal functional outcome, saving patient from undertaking risks of operative intervention.
