**What is Piles (Hemorrhoids)?**
Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are **swollen veins in the a**s and lower re**um**. They are similar to varicose veins and may occur:
* **Internally**, inside the re**um (internal piles)
* **Externally**, under the skin around the a**s (external piles)
---
**What Happens in Stage 1 of Piles?**
In the **first stage**, piles are usually internal and **do not protrude outside the a**s**.
Common symptoms may include:
* Bright red bleeding during or after bowel movements
* Mild discomfort, itching, or irritation in the a**l area
---
**How is Piles Diagnosed?**
Diagnosis typically involves:
✅ Physical Examination:
* **Visual Inspection**: To identify external hemorrhoids, swelling, or lumps
* **Digital Re**al Examination**: A gloved, lubricated finger is gently inserted into the re**um to assess internal piles or other abnormalities
✅ Visual Procedures:
* **Anoscopy/Proctoscopy**: A lighted tube is used to clearly view internal piles inside the re**um
* **Colonoscopy** (in select cases): Recommended for patients over 50 or with family history of colorectal conditions, to rule out other causes of bleeding or discomfort
---
**Symptoms & Medical History Review**
A detailed consultation involves discussing:
* Presence of pain, itching, bleeding, or swelling
* History of constipation, straining during stool, or irregular bowel habits
* Family history or lifestyle factors contributing to piles
