Bijoya Dashami marks the heartfelt farewell to Maa Durga as she departs for her celestial abode after five days of joyous Durga Puja celebrations. While much of India celebrates Vijaya Dashami as the triumph of good over evil, in Bengal, Bijoya carries a bittersweet emotionโ€”our beloved Goddess Uma leaving her maternal home after days filled with rituals, family gatherings, vibrant festivities, adda sessions and the indulgence in delicious sweets and feasts. The Sindur Khela ritual, where Bengali married women joyfully apply vermilion to each other, adds a special touch of love and bonding to this day. Though itโ€™s a day tinged with melancholy, the spirit of โ€˜รกsche bochor abar hobeโ€™ (she will return next year) fills hearts with hope and anticipation. Wishing everyone a Shubho Bijoya - may Maa Durgaโ€™s blessings bring happiness, prosperity and endless joy to every home.

Happy Maha Nabami ! Maha Nabami or the ninth day is celebrated as the day when good conquers evil. It is regarded as the final day of the battle between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura, where in the end Maa Durga took the form of โ€œMahishasura Mardiniโ€ to destroy the evil and emerge victorious. On this day, people wake early to begin their day with a bath or Mahasnan and then offer prayers to the Goddess. The evenings are characterized by the traditional dhunuchi naach, where people dance with dhunuchi (incense burner) ~ an earthen vessel filled with burning camphor and husks of coconut. Accompanied by the rhythmic melody of the dhaak, this tradition of celebration of the victory of good over evil is a captivating event to watch during the aarati. Wish you happy and blessed Maha Nabami.

Happy Maha Ashtami ! Maha Ashtami, or the eighth day of Durga Puja, is marked by the ritualistic โ€˜Sandhi Pujaโ€™ at the cusp of the ending of the eighth day and beginning of the ninth day is considered to be the moment when, as per scriptures, Devi Durga engaged in a fierce battle against Mahishasura and was attacked by the demons Chanda & Munda. Goddess Chamunda emerged from the third eye of Durga and killed Chanda and Munda at the cusp of Ashtami and Navami, the eighth and ninth days respectively. This moment is marked by the sandhi puja, involving the offering of 108 lotuses and lighting of 108 lamps. This day also is marked by โ€˜Pushpanjali', in which people fast in the mornings and only taste food once they have recited the chants of the holy scripture along with the pandit. Even though the 'Pushpanjali' takes place every day of the festival, this is the popular day when everyone takes part in it collectively. Maha Ashtami is also significant since, on this day, the virgin form of the goddess Durga is worshipped. This ritual, commonly referred to as the โ€˜Kumari Pujaโ€™, involves the worshipping of little girls as believed to be the embodiment of the goddess herself. Wish you happy and blessed Maha Ashtami.

Happy Maha Saptami ! The seventh day of Durga Puja, popularly referred to as the Maha Saptami, marks the day of Pran Pratishthaan, wherein the pandit is believed to bring the idols to life by reciting the mantras from the religious scriptures. One of the first rituals of Durga Puja is the Kola-Bou Snan on Saptami early morning. According to followers of this ritual, priests who perform the ceremony tie a bunch of eight plants on the trunk of the banana tree and the grouping of all nine plants constitute the Kola Bou โ€“ a form of Durga herself, which symbolises all the aspects of nature in a harmonious vegetative state. It is then bathed and draped in the โ€˜Laal par shadaโ€™ saree (traditional red and white Bengali saree). The leaves are smeared with vermillion while various offerings are made. As idol worship was not common in the early ages, people worshipped Mother Nature. It was during the Autumn (sharat ritu), the time for reaping crops, agriculturists worshipped Nabapatrika Goddess for good harvest. Later when Durga Puja became a popular festival of masses, these rituals were added to the ceremonies of Durga Puja. Wish you happy and blessed Maha Saptami.

Happy Maha Sasthi! Today marks the beginning of the main rituals of Durga Puja with Bodhon, the ritual of awakening Goddess Durga, observed on the evening of Maha Shashthi. The powerful goddess is worshipped along with her four children - Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Karthika. On this day, the goddess Durga is worshipped in her various forms and the festivities begin with the unveiling of the idol. As we invoke the divine โ€˜Shaktiโ€™ of Maa Durga to eliminate all the demons of ill health around us, we pray to the Divine Mother to bless us all with Good Health, Joy and Happiness.
