When alcohol enters your body, the liver works overtime to break it down, producing toxic by-products. This increases oxidative stress, damages mitochondria (your cells’ energy factories), and leads to cell injury.

Alcohol activates liver immune cells, releasing inflammatory chemicals that push the liver toward fatty liver, fibrosis, and scarring.
It’s also converted into acetaldehyde, a highly toxic compound that damages DNA, proteins, and cell membranes — the root of hangover symptoms and higher cancer risk in some people, depending on genetics.

Bottom line: alcohol stresses the liver at every level — metabolic, inflammatory, and structural.
