This patient, an anthropologist, had recurrent severe pain abdomen due to endometriosis that did not respond to medicines. She underwent removal of uterus and ovaries in 2020 and during the difficult procedure, her re**um suffered an injury.

The re**um was repaired and a stoma was done to protect the repair. Unfortunately she developed a rectova**nal fistula and she started passing stool from her va**na.

To add to her misery, the ileostomy was flush and gave her skin excoriation.

Her career, relationships and social life were severely affected and she went into depression for which she was put on drugs.

Consequently , she could not gather courage to get her rectova**nal fistula repaired because of which she was living on a ileostomy for a long time. She became cachectic.

That’s when a physician persuaded her to see us. We could counsel her and repaired the fistula and then closed her ileostomy. She is now 6 months in her follow up.

She and her husband, who suffered along with her for 5 years but stood with her like a rock , came down last week with tears in their eyes, gratitude and gifts.

That’s what being a doctor is all about. Perhaps, no other profession gives an opportunity to touch lives as much as medical profession can.
