Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic, recurrent, allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva and cornea, most commonly seen in children and young adults, especially in males and in warm, dry climates.

👁️ Clinical Features

📌Symptoms

Intense itching (most prominent symptom)

Photophobia (sensitivity to light)

Lacrimation (watering)

Mucous discharge – thick, ropy, stringy

Foreign body sensation

Blurring of vision (if cornea involved)

Signs

VKC can appear in three forms:

1. Palpebral (tarsal) form:

Large, flat-topped cobblestone papillae on upper tarsal conjunctiva

2. Limbal form:

Thickened, gelatinous limbal papillae

Horner-Trantas dots (white dots of degenerated eosinophils and epithelial cells)

3. Mixed form:

Features of both tarsal and limbal types

Corneal Involvement

Punctate epithelial keratitis

Shield ulcer (superficial sterile ulcer)

Plaque formation → may lead to vision loss if untreated.

What is Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC)⁉️

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a recurrent, bilateral allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva. The episodes are often periodic and have seasonal recurrences. Seasonal exacerbations characterize the condition in the initial stages with a peak incidence during spring and summer. Over time, the condition tends to become perennial. VKC is a subtype of allergic conjunctivitis. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a type of allergic conjunctivitis.

Additional types include perennial and seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and giant papillary conjunctivitis.VKC is classified based on the area of ocular involvement into palpebral, limbal, and mixed forms.

Digital eye strain is a collection of symptoms affecting vision and eyes caused by prolonged use of digital screens, such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. It's also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) and involves issues like dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck pain. The symptoms arise because prolonged screen use requires more visual effort, leading to reduced blinking, poor viewing angles, glare, and eye strain.

📌Common Symptoms

1.Vision problems: Blurred vision and difficulty focusing.

2.Eye discomfort: Dry eyes, itching, redness, and a feeling of something in the eye.

3.Headaches: Pain in or around the eyes.

4.Neck and shoulder pain: Musculoskeletal issues from poor posture while using devices.

📌Causes
1.Reduced blinking:
People blink less often when looking at digital screens, leading to dry eyes.

2.Poor viewing habits:
Using devices at less-than-ideal distances or angles puts more strain on the eyes.

3.Glare and contrast:
Reflections on the screen or poor contrast between text and background can intensify eye strain.

4.Uncorrected vision problems:
Pre-existing vision issues can worsen the effects of digital eye strain.
