Speech Therapy going on at PRABIR KANUNGO CENTRE (PKC) on Tuesdays 4 p.m. onwards.
Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) or speech therapists. It helps people of all ages improve their ability to speak, understand language, and communicate effectively, as well as address issues like social communication, voice, and swallowing difficulties.
What speech therapy addresses
Speech and articulation: Problems with pronunciation, fluency (like stammering), and voice quality.
Language: Difficulties with receptive (understanding) and expressive (using) language, including vocabulary and sentence structure.
Social communication: Understanding and using language in social situations.
Cognition: Issues related to memory, problem-solving, and attention that impact communication.
Swallowing: Problems with chewing and swallowing food and liquids.
Reading and spelling: Can include helping with dyslexia.
Who can benefit from speech therapy
Children: Those with developmental delays, learning disabilities, or communication disorders.
Adults: Individuals who have experienced a stroke, brain injury, or other illnesses that affect speech and language.
People of all ages: Anyone who needs to improve their ability to express their needs and thoughts clearly and understand others better.
How speech therapy works
Assessment: An SLP will assess a person's specific needs to diagnose the problem.
Treatment plan: Based on the assessment, the SLP creates a personalized plan that may include a variety of strategies.
Therapeutic activities: Therapy can involve specific exercises for speech muscles, language intervention activities, repetitive practice of sounds and words, and using other aids like pictures and gestures.
Education and support: SLPs often work with families and caregivers to help them understand the condition and provide support.
