In compliance with the initiative to promote health of employees —-most importantly that of female employees —a Slogan Competition on Anemia was successfully organized by ICMR-NIRBI on 30.01.2026. The event was marked by great zeal and enthusiasm, with active participation from 50 individuals, including both staff and students. This program was conducted to raise awareness about common health challenges and to foster a culture of wellness across the institute. The creativity and commitment shown by all participants ensured the program's success.

On January 29, 2026, ICMR–NIRBI successfully conducted the Third and Final Batch of Rashtriya Karmayogi Large Scale Jan Seva Programme with 19 participants.

ICMR NIRBI hosted its first Early Research Scholar Conclave (ERSC) 2026 on 28th January 2026. The conclave featured an inspiring plenary lecture by Dr. Sudipto Saha, Bose Institute, Kolkata.
The highlight was an innovative Out-of-the-Box Idea ( Innovative Idea Incubator ) session, followed by multiple oral presentations and a dynamic poster session by early career researchers.
The event was enriched by the presence of distinguished external judges from reputed institutions, whose insights and feedback added great academic value.

Ideated by respected Director Dr. Santasabuj Das, advised by senior scientists and executed by senior post-docs, and early research scientists of the institute, with massive participation from scholars and staff it was a day of ideas, interaction, and scientific exchange.

On the occasion of the 77th Republic Day of India, the Director, staff members, and their family members of ICMR-NIRBI, Kolkata, participated in the flag hoisting ceremony held on 26th January 2026 at the premises of the NIRBI-1 building. The atmosphere was charged with national pride and unity as the gathering paid tribute to the spirit of the nation.

The program commenced with a parade, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and an inaugural address by Dr. Santasabuj Das, Director, ICMR-NIRBI. Thereafter, staff members shared their views on the importance of Republic Day in our day-to-day lives and presented cultural programs highlighting patriotism. The celebration concluded with the singing of the National Anthem by all staff members.

Dr. Suman Kalyan Paine, Director and Founder of PDx Nucleus and Project Manager of Genome India, delivered a talk on “Integration of Multi-Omics for Public Health” on 22nd January 2026 at ICMR–NIRBI. This was followed by a lecture by Ms. Chitrarpita Das, Vice President of PDx Nucleus and former Data Scientist at the International Cancer Genome Consortium, on “Strategic NGS Data Management: Scaling Bioinformatics Infrastructure for the Genomic Era.”

The sessions were followed by an engaging and thought-provoking brainstorming discussion with the audience. Scientists, Research Fellows, and Students actively participated, making the seminar highly interactive and successful.

From January 15th to 18th, 2026, representatives from the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (NIRBI) participated in the 11th Indian National Exhibition-cum-Fair 2026 held at the KMDA Ground in Patuli, Kolkata.

Over the course of the four-day event, nearly 500 attendees visited the stall to participate in interactive sessions. The ICMR-NIRBI team disseminated critical information regarding disease prevention, hygiene practices, and infection control, with a specific focus on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). To reinforce these messages, the team distributed free masks and informative leaflets on AMR to the public. Furthermore, we demonstrated different bacterial culture medias and provided essential health screenings, with 150 individuals utilizing the facility for blood pressure checks and random blood sugar testing. This engagement served as a vital platform for community outreach, focusing on elevating public health literacy within the region.

From December 27th to 29th, 2025 representatives from the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) participated in the Sundarban Kristi Mela O Loko Sanskriti Utsab held at Kultali. This engagement served as a vital platform for community outreach, focusing on elevating public health literacy within the region.
Over the course of the three-day event, more than 300 attendees gathered to participate in interactive sessions. The ICMR-NIRBI team disseminated critical information regarding disease prevention and hygiene practices, anti-microbial resistance (AMR), infection prevention fostering a meaningful dialogue with the local population to empower them with health knowledge.

A group of 27 second-semester students from the Department of Zoology and the Department of Microbiology, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur Math visited ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI) on January 13, 2026. The visit aimed to provide exposure to laboratory-based research activities. In the Division of Biochemistry at ICMR-NIRBI, students observed molecular techniques such as Agarose Gel Electrophoresis and Western Blotting. The faculty explained the principles and applications of these techniques. In the Division of Microbiology at ICMR-NIRBI, students were introduced to sample preparation, microbial isolation, and microscopic examination. The students were also introduced to various instruments and their applications in microbiological research. Faculty members explained the working principles and research relevance of all the instruments. The visit enhanced their understanding of practical laboratory workflows. Overall, the exposure was informative and beneficial for their academic development.
