Kerala Piravi marks the birth of the state of Kerala. The state of Kerala was created on November 1st, 1956. November 1st is therefore known as Kerala Piravi Dinam(day) in the state. Malayalees from around the world celebrate November 1st as Kerala Piravi, which in Malayalam means the Day Kerala was formed in the earth. Kerala the southern most state of India took birth on 1 November 1956, long after Indian Independence on 15 August 1947. Beforehand it was three Independence provinces named Malabar, Cochin and Travancore. Kerala originally got its name after the first ruler, Keralian Thamboran, who ruled one of these Independent provinces in the early Centuries. Kerala Stretch along from Gokarnam to Parasala with Arabian Sea as the border on one side. The other border is the western Ghat with the richness of flora and fauna. According to the Hindu Myth Parashurama, the Sixth Incarnation of Mahavishnu (The God-Lord), created Kerala. Parasurama flung his "Mazhu" (axe) from Kanyakumari (cape comerin) to the sea and the sea receded and formed the land Keralam.

Most people in India would find it difficult to really understand how heavy the rainfall that has occurred in Kerala during this monsoon is.

Kerala, even in "normal" years, gets the highest amount of rainfall among all major States in India.

The average annual normal rainfall for Kerala is nearly 3000 millimetres - 2924.3 mm, to be exact. (Hence the verdant green you would see in a satellite image of the State.)

By contrast, neighbouring Tamil Nadu gets 912.4 mm rainfall. Karnataka gets 1147.1 mm, Andhra Pradesh 890 mm, and Telangana 942.6 mm.

Haryana gets a mere 554.7 mm, Delhi gets 747.1 mm, and Uttar Pradesh, 965.3 mm. West Bengal gets 1795.8 mm and Assam gets 2296.8 mm. Maharashtra gets 1151.1 mm, while Madhya Pradesh gets 1048.4 mm.

This is the "normal" (the long-term average of 50 years).

But this year, from 1 June (the onset of the South-West monsoon in India) to 15 August 2018, Kerala has received excess rainfall of 30%. The normal rainfall in this period should have been 1606.5 mm. Instead the State has received 2086.8 mm. The rains and floods are the heaviest since 1924.

Ernakulam district has received 21% excess rain, while Thiruvananthapuram district has got 37% excess rain. Kottayam and Malappuram districts have received 41% excess rain each.

Idukki district, which has major dams such as the Idukki-Cheruthoni-Kulamavu dam complex and the Mullaperiyar dam, has received a whopping 70% excess rain. As expected, the district has seen many landslips and casualties.

The situation in the State is extremely serious.

The shutters of 35 out of 39 dams in Kerala have been opened to release water. Red Alert has been issued in all 14 districts. Scores of people have lost their lives. Tens of thousands of people are living in relief camps. More people are being evacuated from their homes as torrential rains haven't stopped and flood waters continue to run riot.

Please do contribute to the relief efforts by donating to the Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF):

Kerala has now finally been declared free from Nipah virus, with last two patients tested positive having fully recovered.

Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on June 10 said that the infection has been brought under control, “Nipah is under control now and no positive case has been reported. In this backdrop, it has been decided to relax the high alert issued in mid-May after the outbreak of the disease.”

She also added, “We visited the two Nipah positive patients who have been completely cured and according to many, this is something rare. The scare of this getting spread is finally over, as no more patients have tested positive, but a caution has to be there who are under observation, as they have to take complete rest.”

The deadly disease killed 17 people in Kerala including Mohammed Sadik who was the first person suspected to die of this infection. Kozhikode alone reported 13 deaths while three other victims were reported from nearby Malappuram district. 2,000 patients were kept under strict observation.

High alert was lifted over the state on June 10. Health secretary Rajeev Sadanandan said in a statement, “No new cases have been reported for the past 21 days. Since this is more than the longest recorded incubation period of the virus, we consider the Nipah outbreak to be over in the state.”
Schools and colleges were reopened on June 12, which was postponed from June 1 due to outbreak of the disease. The Kozhikode Medical College hospital, where a special Nipah ward was opened, is now seeing patients returning home.
How Kerala defeated Nipah Virus

Kerala’s feat in controlling the outspread of this deadly disease is truly commendable. Authorities were able to put a tap on Nipah virus infection in a just a span of five weeks.

One of the best achievements of the medical community in Kerala was recognising the symptoms and patterns at the very early stage which helped diagnosis extremely easy. It is no mean feat that the very second case was correctly diagnosed as Nipah infection.
Authorities, realising that the disease is transmitted only during the symptomatic phase through close contacts, traced all the persons related to the first case.
After confirming the disease, all the patients and suspected cases were moved to the Government Medical College at Kozhikode. All of these patients were isolated and close to 2,000 contacts of these cases were kept under strict vigil.
As per reports, the control of Nipah Virus was supervised directly by Health Minister K K Shailaja. The dedication shown by the authorities is truly appreciable.

Kerala has now finally been declared free from Nipah virus, with last two patients tested positive having fully recovered.
