Holika Dahan is rooted in the story of Prahlada, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, and his father Hiranyakashipu, a demon king who demanded that everyone worship him instead of Lord Vishnu.

When Prahlada refused, Hiranyakashipu planned to kill him. He sought help from his sister Holika, who had a magical boon that made her immune to fire. Holika tricked Prahlada into sitting on a burning pyre with her. However, due to divine protection, Prahlada remained unharmed while Holika was burned to ashes.
