Breaking Down Ableism: According to the World Health Organization, is the social prejudice and discrimination against those with disabilities on the grounds that average abilities are superior. A fundamental component of ableism is the belief that persons with
disabilities need to be fixed and that a person's impairment is what defines them (medical model). It isolates and excludes the disabled from normal society, limits their chances and rights, and presents them as helpless victims who require protection or charity. It also emphasizes the constraints that prevent people with disabilities from doing many things.
Ableism is more common in society than we think. UNCRPD (United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability) Recognizes accessibility as a fundamental right for persons with disabilities (PWD requires removal of barriers in Physical environments
(buildings, transport), Communication (information, technology), Attitudes and Practices, Services and facilities (education, healthcare) UNRPD brought a paradigm shift from charity to rights, from pity to respect, ensuring equal enjoyment of human rights, from dependence to autonomy: Supporting decision-making and choice, promoting independent living, from barriers to inclusion: Removing obstacles in physical and social environments, fostering participation. This key session was led by Nilesh Singit, Distinguished Research Fellow, Centre for Disabilities Studies NALSAR University of Law Hyderabad. Nilesh Singit is a
Person with Cerebral Palsy and Disability Icon of Maharashtra. As a person living with disability his experience and knowledge enriched the whole seminar in a great way. He talked about accessibility, universal designs, international and national policies on digital accessibility and guidelines of digital accessibility from the depth of his vast experience and knowledge. He also discussed the current state of accessibility in India and highlighted
relevant guidelines and standards, emphasized the Accessible India Campaigns goal of making 50% of government websites accessible by 2024 and reviewed existing laws on
digital accessibility and advocated for their effective implementation.

Diversity: Diversity encompasses the range of differences among individuals, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, religion, disability, and cultural background. Embracing diversity involves recognizing, respecting, and valuing these differences.

Equity: Equity involves ensuring fairness and justice by addressing systemic barriers that perpetuate unequal outcomes for different groups of people. It requires identifying and eliminating disparities to ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources needed to thrive.

Accessibility: Accessibility refers to the design of products, services, environments, and facilities that can be accessed, understood, and used by all individuals, including those with disabilities. It involves removing barriers and providing accommodations to ensure equitable access for everyone, regardless of ability or impairment
