Kottayam Medical College being the only referral institution for Kottayam ,Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts a lot of patients are coming daily to MCH. Even people from nearby areas of Ernakulam and Alleppey districts also come here. Being a government run hospital where free treatment is available to low income group a lot of poor people are depending MCH for serious illness. The pitiable thing is that many elderly people from poor families are dropped by relatives or friends at MCH and leave them uncared. Some orphans, people thrown out to the streets and abandoned by relatives also are brought to MCH by police and humanitarian agencies for treatment. All these people are at the mercy of philanthropists and social workers for treatment and care after discharge. There are some institutions run by religious groups and charitable organisations near MCH which provide short stay facilities, medical assistance etc. Most of them cater to people from their own groups or coming with recommendation from political leaders. Some institutions take care of special category people like mentally impaired, cancer cases etc. But general category patients without anybody to introduce and that need rehabilitation are being neglected totally. Aswasabhavan is mainly concentrating on such cases that are not taken care of by any agencies. We at Aswasabhavan not only attent to their physical needs but also try our best to create self esteem, confidence and help them to stand on their own feet. At present we have two rented homes near by MCH Kottayam where we can accommodate around 25 to 30 people. The need is rather high but due to lack of accommodation facilities and financial support, we could help only a minority that approach us for help.
