Kidney Stone
A kidney stone is a hard, pebble-like deposit that forms in the kidney. They are typically made up of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate, but can also be composed of other substances such as uric acid or struvite. Kidney stones can cause severe pain in the lower back, side, or groin as they pass through the urinary tract. They can also cause blood in the urine, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment options include drinking plenty of water to help flush out the stones, taking pain medication, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
Symptoms
The symptoms of kidney stones can vary depending on the size and location of the stone. Some common symptoms include
• Severe pain in the lower back, side, or groin, which may come in waves
• Blood in the urine (hematuria)
• Nausea and vomiting
• Frequent urge to urinate
• Pain or burning sensation while urinating
• Cloudy, dark, bloody, or foul-smelling urine
• Chills and fever if an infection is present
Symptoms can also be similar to a urinary tract infection, so it is important to see a doctor if you suspect you have a kidney stone.
If the kidney stone is large or causing obstruction, it can also lead to severe pain, vomiting, obstruction in the urinary tract and in some cases, kidney damage.
