*Five-Day Training Programme on Grassroot Intervention and Community Rehabilitation Begins at GMC Handwara*
The Department of Psychiatry, Associated Hospital, GMC Handwara today inaugurated a Five-Day Training Programme on Grassroot Intervention and Community Rehabilitation, aimed at strengthening community-based responses to substance use disorders and related mental health challenges.
The training programme places strong emphasis on early identification and intervention, psychosocial rehabilitation, and meaningful community participation as key pillars in addressing substance use disorders in a holistic, integrated, and sustainable manner. The initiative is designed to equip healthcare professionals, counselors, and field-level workers with practical knowledge and skills required for effective outreach, treatment continuity, and long-term rehabilitation at the grassroots level.
The programme was formally launched by *Prof. Dr. Qayoom, HOD Anesthesia, Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Medical Superintendent, Associated Hospital GMC Handwara, Dr. Azhar Masood, I/c HOD Psychiatry, Dr. Saif Choudhary Nodal Officer ATF and Dr. Rauf Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry.* The speakers highlighted the growing need for community-oriented mental health services and underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between hospitals, community stakeholders, and rehabilitation services.
In their addresses, the dignitaries stressed that substance use disorders require not only medical management but also sustained psychosocial support, family involvement, and community engagement to ensure recovery and social reintegration. They appreciated the Department of Psychiatry for taking the initiative to organize such a comprehensive capacity-building programme.
The training will be imparted by experts from Department of Psychiatry*Dr Rouf Assistant Professor* *Dr. Owais Ahmed Mir Medical Officer, ATF*, and *Mr Nauman Ahmad, Counselor, ATF*, who will provide training on key issues like Mental Health Drug addiction and Opoid use disorders Opoid detoxification, Drug abuse management strategies and also share field experiences, best practices, and practical approaches to counseling, relapse prevention, and community-based rehabilitation.
The five-day programme is expected to serve as a significant platform for knowledge sharing, skill enhancement, and collaboration, ultimately contributing to improved mental health services and effective management of substance use disorders at the grassroots level in the region.

is pleased to inform that it will be conducting a 5-Day Training Programme on Grassroot Intervention and Community Training on Rehabilitation Module under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

This training aims to strengthen community-level interventions and capacity building in the area of substance use disorder rehabilitation, in line with the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and National Health Mission, J&K.
Stakeholders and participants are encouraged to actively engage and contribute towards a drug-free and healthier society.

MS GMC HANDWARA has categorically REJECTED the allegations of MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE circulating on social media regarding the recent incident involving a trauma patient.
Dr AIJAZ AHMAD BHAT, MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT, GMC HANDWARA clarified the following facts:
CASE DETAILS
The patient was brought to the EMERGENCY as a TRAUMA CASE.
Initial assessment was done as per STANDARD PROTOCOL.
GCS was 15/15 indicates not very Serious and then
eFAST was ADVISED and found NEGATIVE.
As the patient had HEAD INJURY, CT SCAN was ADVISED.
CT SCAN ISSUE
Due to TEMPORARY TECHNICAL AND MACHINERY ISSUES, the CT SCAN at GMC HANDWARA was NON FUNCTIONAL at that time.
The patient was PLANNED to be SHIFTED to SDH KUPWARA or GMC BARAMULLA.
UNAUTHORIZED PATIENT MOVEMENT
Before formal shifting, the patient attendant LEFT the hospital WITHOUT INFORMING the TREATING DOCTOR.
They were reportedly INFORMED by someone about a PRIVATE CT SCAN facility in HANDWARA.
SECURITY PERSONNEL tried to STOP them as per PROTOCOL, but they left the premises.
Later, a VIDEO went VIRAL on social media, leading to MISLEADING NARRATIVES.
EMERGENCY CARE PROTOCOL
Every patient entering EMERGENCY first encounters EMERGENCY MEDICINE and SURGERY RESIDENTS.
SENIOR RESIDENTS and FACULTY are AVAILABLE for IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE in SERIOUS CASES.
CARE was provided as per ACCEPTED MEDICAL STANDARDS.
PUBLIC APPEAL
Dr AIJAZ AHMAD BHAT urged the PUBLIC to REFRAIN from SPREADING MISINFORMATION.
He emphasized that such acts HARM the reputation of a GROWING MEDICAL INSTITUTION like GMC HANDWARA.
FUTURE ASSURANCE
A NEW CT SCAN MACHINE is READY and will be FUNCTIONAL very soon at GMC HANDWARA.
The administration reaffirmed its COMMITMENT to PATIENT CARE, TRANSPARENCY, and CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT of health services.
