Warning Signs & Symptoms of Diabetes You Must Know

Did you know one in 11 Indians is already battling diabetes, a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.

Your body breaks down most of the food you eat into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. When your blood sugar increases, it signals your pancreas to release insulin. However, with diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it as much as it should. Too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream when there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin. Over time, that can cause serious health problems like heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

The Four Main Types Of Diabetes

•Prediabetes can occur at any age and increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In this stage, your blood sugar levels are higher than they should be but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2.
•Type 1 can start at any age, but it often begins during childhood or adolescence. It occurs when your pancreas doesn’t make insulin resulting in one taking insulin shots daily.
•Type 2 can develop at any age and is the most prevalent type in India. It occurs when your pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin, or your body isn’t using it well.
During pregnancy, some women who don’t have diabetes develop gestational diabetes. It usually disappears after the baby is born, but having gestational diabetes increases both your and your baby’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes later on.
Not everyone with diabetes notices symptoms. It is challenging to detect prediabetes and type 2 because they develop gradually over several years. Women with gestational diabetes typically don’t have any symptoms at all. The most common diabetes symptoms are thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, and losing weight.

Warning Signs To Look Out For

•Feeling more thirsty than usual
•Urinating often
•Losing weight without trying
•Presence of ketones in the urine
•Feeling tired and weak
•Feeling irritable or having other mood changes
•Having a blurry vision
•Having slow-healing sores
•Contracting many infections, such as gum, skin, and vaginal infections.

Even if one is not experiencing these symptoms, indicators such as a BMI higher than 25, anyone older than 35 years, or anyone diagnosed with pre-diabetes are all advised to get tested yearly.


How To Know If You Have Diabetes

Four standard blood tests recommended are…

A1C test that provides information about your average levels of blood glucose over three months.
Blood sugar test before or after meals. It doesn’t matter when you last ate.
A fasting blood sugar test requires you to fast for at least 10-12 hours after a meal the previous night.
Glucose Tolerance Test for which you are required to fast overnight, post which the blood sugar level is measured. You are then required to consume a sugary liquid, post which the blood sugar levels are again tested regularly for the next two hours.

Have A Healthy Vacation

Does your diet go on a vacation too when you’re traveling?

Traveling can often pose challenges to those on a diet. A vacation is usually considered as an excuse to go off-track from your diet by indulging in over-sized meals or foods with high fat or leaving the exercise in a corner.

But, if you plan well in advance, you can have your cake and eat it too. It does not have to be a hilly road. Here are some tips to manage your health when on vacation:

Pack a Meal
Carry some nutrient-dense foods packed with yourself like multi grain/whole wheat bread sandwiches, multi-grain flour theplas, a pack of raw salads (carrot/cucumber sticks), fruits, low-fat yogurt, roasted chanas / soya beans, sports bars, khakras / dal khakras, etc. In this way, if you are stuck in a place with bad eating options, you would have healthy options in hand when you’re hungry.

Stay Hydrated
Instead of over indulging in dehydrating caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, it is recommended to carry bottled water. Ask for sparkling or flavored waters, they are a great alternative too.

In flights, low humidity and re-circulation of air is a good setup for dehydration which, in turn, can cause fatigue. Have a thumb rule of having a glass of water every hour.

Do Not Skip Meals

Skipping meals when on a holiday is considered as an option to save both money and calories. But, it is important for one to understand that the chances of over-eating in the next meal increases. Eating controlled portion-sized meals every 3 hours is essential to keep the metabolism high.

Continue on Your Exercise RegimeRegime

No gym in the hotel’ is no excuse to fall off from the workout wagon! There are varied refreshing activities one can indulge in to stay fit like swimming, hiking, yoga, stretching, push-ups, etc

Also, walking, running or cycling around the area is a great way to discover a new place and get outdoors.

Choose Your Meal Options Carefully

Order judiciously while in restaurants. For example, when in an Italian restaurant order for pastas with Arrabiata sauce or whole wheat, thin crust pizzas with more of vegetable topping or when in a Chinese restaurant choose clear soup or stir-fried vegetables with Tofu.

Choices like baked over fried or stir-fried over buttered are wise ones which would help you in saving those extra inches.

Remember that your holiday is not only about food and while you’re not on your regular routine it is very easy for you to break that diet. You don’t need to sacrifice on good nutrition just to have a good time.

Amazing Benefits Of Sleeping On Your Sides


“Looks like I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning”. There is truth to this expression, as research indicates that your sleep position affects the quality of rest and your overall health! Both the sides and back positions keep your spine supported and balanced, relieve pressure on the spinal tissues, and enable your muscles to relax and recover. However, side-sleeping, in particular, has a slew of health benefits such as – aiding in detoxification, improving spinal alignment, and keeping your heart, gut, and liver super healthy.

Side-sleeping also reduces heartburn at night caused by GRED (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or Acid Reflux. So you snore less, digest better, have an easy bowel movement, and feel fresh in the morning. Sleeping sideways can clear the brain of metabolic waste while we sleep and thus makes our brain work better.

Left vs. Right – Which side to sleep

In cases of heart-related problems, one might experience discomfort on the left side, and it is better to sleep on the right. Left-side sleeping is the best for all other common issues such as heartburn, acid reflux, back pain, digestive and gut health, and high blood pressure. And for pregnant women, left-side sleeping improves blood flow between the heart, fetus, uterus, and kidneys while keeping pressure off the liver. Remember that right-side sleeping is not going to cause any distress – like acid reflux or heartburn. It just does not help existing discomfort or inflammation.

Is side-sleeping for everyone?

Side-sleeping on the wrong mattress might have an adverse effect. If the mattress is too firm, it can increase pressure on your shoulders, hips, and knees. You might sink in too far and alter your natural spinal alignment if it is too soft. Also, side-sleeping can increase pressure in the eye area for people with glaucoma or sinus congestion. It is best to consult your doctor in such cases.

Tips to change your sleeping position:

If you think, “This is all good, but do I even have control over my sleeping position once I doze off”? Here are some tips to help you with that. You can also sleep with a pillow between your knees to keep your hips aligned. Or create a bit of discomfort by sewing or taping a tennis ball to the front of the shirt for stomach sleepers and to the back of the shirt for back sleepers. Or try couch sleeping – couches are typically narrow and force you to sleep on your side.

It will be challenging to sleep just on the sides through the night. If you get uncomfortable, physicians recommend switching to the back for a short while rather than sleeping on your stomach.
