Did you know the birth control pill is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization, right alongside asbestos, to***co, and plutonium?

Let that sink in.

This classification isn't speculation—it's based on solid evidence linking combined oral contraceptives (containing synthetic estrogen & progestin) to breast, cervical, and liver cancers.

🧬 Yes, the pill may lower the risks of ovarian and endometrial cancers.
But what about the rising rates of breast cancer, especially in younger women? What about long-term hormone disruption, blood clots, mood disorders, and nutrient depletion?

The Truth About Vegetarian Diets and Vitamin Deficiency was questioned in one of the recent advertisements. The advertisement asserts that “39% of Indians are vegetarians; thus, they are at high risk of vitamin deficiencies.” Such messaging is not only misleading but also problematic, exemplifying a worrying trend of fear-based marketing that seeks to undermine established dietary traditions to promote supplement sales.
Do Vegetarian Diets Lead to Deficiency? The assertion that vegetarian diets intrinsically cause vitamin deficiencies is unsupported by scientific evidence.
One needs to really understand that no diet, be it vegetarian or non-vegetarian, or otherwise, guarantees optimal nutrition unless it is balanced and thoughtfully composed.
Nutrient deficiencies happen due to poor dietary planning, excessive reliance on processed foods, and lack of diversity, not the exclusion of animal products per se. Both plant-based and omnivorous diets can lead to deficiencies if dominated by refined sugars, packaged foods, and insufficient variety.
World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Dietetic Association (ADA) affirm that: “Well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”
This position spans all stages of life, including childhood, pregnancy, adulthood, and ageing.
Vitamin B12: The biggest example people quote is Vitamin B12.
While Vitamin B12 is present in animal-derived foods, this does not constitute a fundamental flaw in vegetarian nutrition. India has initiated B12 fortification programs, and high-quality, affordable supplements are readily available. Dried Purple Laver. (nori) is the most suitable Vitamin B12 source presently available for vegetarians. Furthermore, dried purple laver also contains high levels of other nutrients that are lacking in vegetarian diets, such as iron and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Dried purple laver is a natural plant product, and it is suitable for most people in various vegetarian groups.
It is misleading to target B12 as a sole weakness of vegetarianism, especially as B12 deficiency is common among non-vegetarians, often due to malabsorption or gastrointestinal issues.
Nutritional Richness Within Traditional Indian Vegetarian Diets
Traditional Indian vegetarian fare is inherently equipped to meet most nutritional needs:

Iron: Lentils, spinach, jaggery, drumstick leaves

Calcium: Sesame seeds, ragi, leafy greens, dairy

Zinc: Pumpkin seeds, pulses, whole grains

Omega-3s: Flaxseeds, walnuts
Folate, Magnesium, Fiber: Abundant across legumes, grains, and vegetables
Moreover, traditional meal structures pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C sources (e.g., amla, citrus, tomatoes), enhancing absorption in ways validated by modern science.
Preserving the Integrity of Traditional Wisdom
A balanced Indian thali—lentils (protein, iron), grains (energy), vegetables (micronutrients), salad (vitamin C), and curd (probiotics, calcium)—offers a complete and time-tested nutritional framework. These combinations stem from centuries of empirical refinement and should not be invalidated by marketing rhetoric.
Ethical Responsibility in Health Communication
The advertisement in question employs fearmongering to fuel supplement sales, unjustly casting vegetarianism as inferior or deficient. Such tactics threaten public trust in dietary systems that are foundational to Ayurveda, Yoga, and Indian culture.

Nutritional advertising must:
Rely on scientific substantiation rather than commercial interests
Avoid exploiting public fears or denigrating established dietary patterns
Be subjected to strict regulation to safeguard public interest
A Call for Accountability and Food Wisdom

Nutritionists and health professionals to advocate for balanced, evidence-based nutrition rooted in both tradition and modern research
Policymakers to ensure ethical transparency in health and supplement marketing
