Weaning of calves/kids/lamb instantly reduces the stresses on the dam as a result of total isolation of the weaner.
Why wean?
1. Allows dam to recover from stresses of lactation and improve body condition, therefore, shortens calving/lambing/kidding interval.
2. Increased conception rates in females as weaning before or during the breeding season can allow dams a greater opportunity to rebreed in an optimum time frame. In all of the farms, one should manage and wean early and have sheep and goats give birth twice in one year.
3. Improves forage availability for the dam since demand by the weaner is eliminated.
Early weaning requires:
• Increased greater attention to proper health, nutrition, and management practices such as dehorning, castration, etc.
• Farmers must be able to afford to feed weaned animals complete diets which contain the correct quantities of all nutrients needed by growing animals.
• Weaners are to be isolated in their own pen which is clean, dry, and disinfected.
• The farmer is able to monitor daily feed intake, digestive disturbances, and respiratory diseases.
Ages for weaning:
✅Calves can be weaned as early as 8 to 12 weeks after being creep fed for at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to weaning.
✅Kids and lambs can be weaned as early as 2 weeks and introduced to lamb creep. We wean at a month old at all farms we manage.
Before weaning:
✅Weigh animals to calculate the correct amount of feed to give to avoid underfeeding and overfeeding.
✅Provide good quality vitamins and minerals supplementation to weaners.
✅Vaccinate weaners for clostridial diseases found in pasture e.g. Pulpy kidney, Botulism, tetanus, etc.
✅Treat for both internal and external parasites.
✅The farm's emergency kit must be stocked with oxytetracycline for sulfur-based antibiotics as well as a proselyte to treat scours in weaned animals.
