DOWN SYNDROME (DS), also known as TRISOMY 21, is a genetic condition caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21. Individuals with DS exhibit a range of physical and developmental characteristics. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing DS by addressing motor skills, muscle strength, and overall function.
1. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- GROWTH FAILURE : Children with DS may experience growth delays.
-HYPOTONIA: Reduced muscle tone is common, affecting motor skills.
- LIGAMENTOUS LAXITY: Joints may be more flexible.
- FACIAL FEATURE: These include a flat posterior head, slanting eyes, and a small, arched palate.
-HEART CONDITIONS :Congenital heart defects are more prevalent.
- INTEDTINAL ISSUES: Intestinal blockage and an enlarged colon can occur.
-OTHER FEATURES : Dental anomalies, short and broad hands, and special skin ridge patterns.
2. DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE :
- Children with DS achieve motor skills necessary for daily living but may reach milestones later than their peers.
- Adjusted milestones include sitting independently, standing, and walking¹.
3. PHYSIOTHERAPY MANAGEMENT :
- EARLY INTERVENTION : Starting physiotherapy early helps address developmental delays and muscle weakness.
-SENSORY INTEGRATION THERAPY : Helps improve sensory processing and coordination.
- NEURO DEVELOPMENT TREATMENT : Focuses on movement patterns and functional skills.
- PERCEPTUAL -MOTOR THERAPY : Enhances motor planning and coordination.
-STRENGTH AND COARDINATION PROGRAM : Improve muscle strength and overall function
Remember that each individual with DS is unique, and physiotherapy programs should be tailored to their specific needs. Regular assessments and ongoing support are essential for optimizing their quality of life and independence.
