Researchers in Sweden and the U.S. have carried out the first transplant of gene-edited insulin-producing cells in a human.

A 42-year-old man with type 1 diabetes received nearly 80 million modified cells in his forearm, engineered with CRISPR-Cas12b to evade the immune system.

12 weeks later, the cells were still producing insulin without the need for immunosuppressive drugs.

After the procedure, his blood sugar control improved, with HbA1c dropping by about 42%. The cells began releasing some insulin after meals, although he still needed additional insulin because the initial cell dose was low.

Researchers say the study is still early since it only involved one patient. The man will be monitored for a year, and if all goes well, future trials may test higher doses of the modified cells.
