Dr. Abhishek Shukla, while concluding the one-month internship of ANM students, emphasized the critical importance of self-protection in nursing practice, especially when handling patients with infectious diseases like HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. He highlighted that as nurses will care for millions of patients throughout their careers, ensuring their own safety is paramount to maintaining a safe healthcare environment. By protecting themselves, they can also protect their patients from unnecessary risks.
He stressed the need for routine assessment of viral markers in patients. Every hospital admission should include mandatory screening for Hepatitis and HIV to ensure early detection and necessary precautions. Understanding a patient’s infectious status helps prevent accidental exposure and promotes safer medical practices. He urged the students to always check for viral markers before proceeding with treatment and to be proactive in identifying potential risks.
He also reinforced the importance of using protective gear, including gloves, masks, and PPE kits, particularly when treating wounds. He advised that in cases of accidental exposure, immediate intervention is crucial. Administering IV immunoglobulin (IG) within hours can effectively prevent complications. By adhering to these preventive measures, nurses can continue to provide high-quality care while safeguarding their own health.
