As a Physiotherapist, we suggest these physiotherapy solutions for Ankylosing Spondylitis under proper guidance:
1. Posture Training
Practice standing tall with your chest open and shoulders back.
Use wall exercises (standing with back against the wall) to maintain spinal alignment.
This prevents stooping (hunchback posture) that AS often causes.
2. Spinal Mobility Exercises
Gentle stretching of the spine, especially the thoracic region.
Catβcamel stretches, trunk rotations, and extension exercises help maintain flexibility.
This slow down stiffness progression.
3. Breathing Exercises
Deep breathing to expand the rib cage.
Helps maintain chest expansion and lung capacity, which AS can restrict.
Practice daily with diaphragmatic breathing.
4. Strengthening & Core Stability
Strengthen back, abdominal, and hip muscles.
Bridges, pelvic tilts, and core stability exercises support the spine.
Strong muscles reduce stress on inflamed joints.
5. Hydrotherapy & Low-Impact Aerobic Exercise
Swimming, water therapy, or cycling to keep joints mobile without high impact.
Warm water exercises reduce pain and stiffness.
Builds endurance while being gentle on the spine.
