Atrophic Rhinitis… could be because of hormonal imbalances, environmental factors, abuse of nasal decongestants. This young kid presented to us today recurrent nasal bleeds, on endoscopy his nasal cavity mucosa and bones appear atrophied… I have prescribed him medications for 10 days… Let us see how he responds to the treatment… we may need more tests to ascertain the cause if he does not respond well…

Right Modified Radical Mastoidectomy cavity , 18 months post op. A well epithelised mastoid cavity can be visualised. Also, adequately lowered facial ridge can be seen . Should be noted that the EAC floor is now in almost same plane as the mastoid cavity floor which prevents the sump effect from happening. The stapes head can be seen posteriorly in good contact with the new tympanic membrane. BC is still better than AC. But patient is satisfied and does not complain of hearing loss.

Button batteries (small, round batteries) are particularly hazardous due to their size and potential for severe damage. A three year old child presented to our emergency unit with a history of battery insertion in his right nasal cavity. He was urgently taken up for endoscopic removal which was achieved successfully.
Button batteries are notorious particularly because they can leak and cause intense surrounding tissue reaction and sometimes severe functional and cosmetic damage.

Take home message:
1. Keep batteries out of children's reach.
2. Secure battery compartments in toys and devices.
3. Educate children about the dangers of inserting objects into their nose or other body openings.

If you suspect a child has inserted battery in the nose, act quickly and seek medical attention.
