Multiple Myeloma is a blood cancer with a close to 100% risk of relapse. Best treatment at present consists of chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation, which should be done for all patients less than 70 years of age.

Platelet count reduction is only an emergency if it is below 10-20000. Otherwise, there is no need to panic and there is usually enough time for assessing the cause of low platelets and the need for further evaluation.

All patients with myeloma should received an autologous transplant unless contraindicated.

All patients with Multiple Myeloma less than 70 years of age should be evaluated for a stem cell transplantation. This is a disease with a close to 100% risk of relapse, and treatment should include an autologous transplant for as many patients as possible.

Stem Cell Transplantation for Thalassemia has been shown to be cost effective compared to lifelong blood transfusions and also enables a better quality of life by eliminating regular blood transfusions. Best results are obtained if performed as young as possible.

Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) transplantation is a routine procedure that can be done to control or cure a number of blood diseases and blood cancers. There is no surgery involved and it is a purely medical procedure.

All new patients with multiple myeloma benefit from a stem cell transplantation. If the patient's age is less than 70 years, it is a must to check for transplant eligibility at diagnosis itself to plan further treatment.
