Foot drop is the inability to lift the front part of the foot (dorsiflexion) due to weakness or paralysis of muscles, resulting in a dragging or slapping gait. Often caused by peroneal nerve injury (compression at the knee), it is a symptom of underlying neurological, muscular, or spinal disorders.
Foot drop can be caused by nerve damage alone or by muscle or spinal cord trauma, abnormal anatomy, toxins, or disease.
Treatment includes:
1. Foot drop splint bracing
2. Muscle stimulation
3. Tactile stimulation
4. Mirror therapy
5. Active assisted exercise
6. Propioception training
7. Gait training
8. Towel exercises
9. Weight bearing exercises
