FATTY LIVER - VERY COMMON about 10 million cases per year in India. In approx 1/4 th of patients if not restricted it can further progress to Cirrhosis and Liver failure.
FATTY LIVER CANNOT BE CURED BUT PROGRESSION CAN BE RESTRICTED . How ??
Main risk factor for fatty liver are Genetics, Obesity , Type 2 Diabetes and Alcohol intake . It may occur in people who take very little or no alcohol then it is called NAFLD ( Non alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)or Metabolic dysfunction associated liver disease ( MASLD) .
In early phase no symptoms or complaint so goes unnoticed or detected during USG abdomen. In few people , NAFLD changes to NASH ( steatohepatitis ) here inflammatory cells do liver cell injury causing Liver dysfunction. Patient may feel upper abdominal pain , bloating, loss of appetite, fatigue etc . This is diagnosed with lab tests ( Liver function test LFT , Liver biopsy ) and other medical tests. In approx 1/4 th of patients NASH can further progress to Cirrhosis and Liver failure.

This can be restricted by lifestyle changes :
1. Reduce weight if obese
2. Add physical activity
3. Restrict alcohol intake
4. Control Diabetes and maintain normal blood Lipids ( cholesterol/ Triglycerides) levels
