एक सूफी कहानी तुमसे कहूं।
एक आदमी जंगल गया। शिकारी था। किसी झाड़ के नीचे बैठा था थका-मांदा, पास ही एक खोपड़ी पड़ी थी किसी आदमी की। ऐसे ही, कभी-कभी हो जाता है न, तुम भी अपने स्नानगृह में अपने से बात करने लगते हो कि आईने के सामने खड़े होकर मुंह बिचकाने लगते हो। आदमी का बचपन कहीं जाता तो नहीं। खोपड़ी पास पड़ी थी, ऐसे ही बैठे, कुछ काम तो था नहीं, उसने कहा: हलो ! क्या कर रहे हैं? मजाक में ही कहा था। अपने से ही मजाक कर रहा था। खाली पड़ा था, कुछ खास काम भी नहीं था, आशा भी नहीं थी कि खोपड़ी बोलेगी।

खोपड़ी बोली कि हलो! घबड़ा गया एकदम ! अब कुछ पूछना जरूरी था, क्योंकि जब खोपड़ी बोली अब कुछ न पूछें तो भी भद्दा लगेगा। तो पूछा उसने कि आपकी यह गति कैसे हुई? तो उस खोपड़ी ने कहा: बकवास करने से। भागा शहर की तरफ घबड़ाहट में। भरोसा तो नहीं आता था, मगर बिल्कुल कान से सुना था, आंख से देखा था। सोचा जाकर राजा को कह दूं। कुछ पुरस्कार भी मिलेगा, ऐसी खोपड़ी अनूठी है! राजमहल में होनी चाहिए। राजा को जाकर कहा कि ऐसी खोपड़ी देखी है। राजा ने कहा : फिजूल की बकवास मत कर! उसने कहा : नहीं, बकवास नहीं कर रहा हूं। अपनी आंख से देखकर आ रहा हूं। भागा चला आया हूं आपको खबर देने।

सम्राट् ने पहले तो टालने की कोशिश की, लेकिन वह शिकारी जाहिर था, प्रसिद्ध शिकारी था। सम्राट् उसे जानता भी था, झूठ बोलेगा भी नहीं। लेकर अपने दरबारियों को पहुंचा। शिकारी आगे-आगे प्रसन्नता से... उसने जाकर उस खोपड़ी से कहा: हलो! खोपड़ी कुछ भी न बोली। अरे, उसने कहा : हलो! खोपड़ी बिल्कुल न बोली। हिलाया खोपड़ी को, कहा : हलो! मगर खोपड़ी एकदम सन्नाटे में हो गयी। थोड़ा घबड़ाया। राजा ने कहा : मुझे पहले ही पता था। अपने दरबारियों से कहा : उतारो इसकी गर्दन। उसकी गर्दन कटवा दी।

जब राजा लौट गया गर्दन कटवा कर तो वह खोपड़ी बोली : हलो ! आपकी यह गति कैसे हुई?

उसने कहा : बकवास करने से।
